Hello I have several different kinds of lavendar seeds of the Datura. Also of different Daturas. I can share some of what I got as I have gotten these from other Trades. Crispykritter: If you cut an autumn olive with a saw, be SURE you paint the stump with something like Stump-B-Gone (sp?) or a similar serious chemical. You'll have to do it several times. Otherwise, per both advice from conservation groups and our own experience (even WITH painting with Roundup), if the stump survives, you will merely succeed in generating a host of new ones from shoots. Best of all, if it's small enough, is to pull it out by the roots. There's a fantastic tool recommended by the CT Invasive Plant Group (or at least, suggested by a member of their organization who spoke to us) called "Weed Wrench" which in the larger sizes, really CAN remove autumn olives by "popping out" the roots. It's not cheap, but I've seen it in action and it can yank out multiflora, autumn olive, burning bush with relative ease (relative, that is, to digging them out!) So beware if you cut and don't kill the stump that you may be just making yourself an even bigger problem in years to come! Here is a link that might be useful: Weed Wrench site

I believe that you will learn that time of year is very critical. Late or maturing softwood cuttings are usually OK, but I believe you'll have better luck when the new growth has just begun to form firm woody tissue.Here in central Virginia this is mid-May. The use of o.8% Indolebutanoic acid (IBA)and a rooting medium that drains well is also a necessity. Do not allow the cuttings to wilt!!! They nornally form roots in 6-7 weeks at 70-75 degrees F. Syringa oblata var dilatata seems to withstand the horrible heat and humidity of Virginia better than most species. Good Luck!!!

Question: How do I know if they have rooted and what do I do with them then? I need instructions on transplanting it as I have it in Vermiculate and don't know if I need to shake it off or include that when I plant it. It has been thirty something days. By the way I have only had to water them once the whole time so I highly recommend using vermiculate and it was only $3 at Lowes for a fairly big bag. I hear that lilacs are one of the easiest to propagate so they are my first. So far they are not dead....
