How high the hedge?

I understand that you can use the golden mean to plan the width of a mixed border, that ideally it should be one third the length of the bed.

Is there another rule relating the height of a hedge to the depth of the space it encloses?

My front yard faces south.

The driveway occupies the eastern ten feet, the rest of the yard is 40 feet wide.

It is 18 feet deep in front of the porch and sideyard, on the east side of the lot, about 23 feet.

It is 26 feet de. ep across the west side of the yard, about 17 feet.

It is like two rectangles, one is 23 feet wide by 18 feet deep, and the other is 17 feet wide by 26 feet deep.

I am planning on putting a split rail fence across the front and planting a variety of arborvitae behind it. I was planning on using Wintergreen on the western deeper side for quick privacy (The street runs downhill as you come from west, a mild, but noticeable slope) I wonder if the wintergreen would eventually shade out the porch, especially in winter. I hope to keep pruning to a minimum, so I wonder if I should use a shorter species such as Wareana in that stretch.

Any thoughts?
