Watse Land

No, not T.S Elliot. There is an argument going on at the Tools forum about the best way to clear a weed patch, the argument is between Round-up and tilling, there is no mention of the intended use for the land once cleared. Just as a hypothetical question let's assume I have a piece of weed infested waste ground at the back of my house, the soil is clay with tennis ball sized rocks in it and it measures 50' x 50'. I want to turn this into a cliche back yard, that is: a square of grass with flower beds on three sides and a patio up near the house. I will say more about the zone and plant selection if you want but initially the question is how do I prepare this piece of land for lawn surrounded by flower beds?
