How many of you are just itching to get back out into the gardens

I am counting the days! Although I must admit that this year hasn't been as bad as most. We had a pretty bad cold spell that lasted from mid November - mid December, and then it turned off pretty mild. I think we have stayed cold enough to let the perrenials have their long winter's nap, so that is good.

I can hardly wait to start watching the trees and my gardens start waking up to their new year. This is my first year to winter sow, so I am excited to see what germinates.

I also have seeds started in the house that keeps me busy as well as my houseplants.

What have you started indoors or WS? Let's chit chat about our coming plans as well!

Have been out looking and some of my daffies are getting ready to bloom. suppose to rain today and am hoping. Need the moisture. Have been doing some winter sowing and hope gets cold enough for them. Judy

It was only winter here for a short bit in Dec. Since then have had mostly above normal temps, and I've been able to play outside off and on. One particularly warm day, I was even tempted to move a small pink flowering almond bush...but came to my senses and thought it was a 'bit' early.

Spring bulbs are springing up everywhere!

Wow, thanks Brenda, I never would have thought of that! I will definitely check it out at the pet store, as my experiments with it really helped, particularly in keeping my tomatoes from getting that blossom end rot you get when the moisture level is so inconsistent. If I can get it less expensively, I can use it in all my pots and have to struggle less with keeping up with watering. ksrogers, I wonder if that is why the tarragon in the stores around here is so bland? When I lived in the Bay Area, I used to buy it at my favorite produce market and it was simply wonderful, but ever since moving to the valley, it tastes little better than grass that was maybe grown next to tarragon. It's funny, one doesn't think of herbs as having different cultivars, but I have two pots of marjoram, and they bear only slight resemblance to each other. I bought a kumquat and a bare root nectarine the other day. The gal at the nursery told me to top the nectarine right above 4 "limbs" (twigs, more like) as soon as I planted it, but I chickened out, so it's in a nice pot, untopped at the moment. I was screwing up my courage to do it today, but a storm came in and it's been too wet and icky to do anything in the yard. I know I have to do it, but it seems such a brutal thing to do to a new "baby" I just brought home. My daffodils are starting to bloom and I put in some primroses the other day, so the yard isn't looking quite as winter-bleak. But, the green beans I planted indoors in pots on the 10th sprouted, and then mysteriously grew no leaves. Finally, I dug one up and have deduced that the plants succumbed to the craving for fresh greens in my one indoor-only cat. Grumble. So, now I have dug up a pot full of sprouting bird seed from under the feeder to do duty as kitty-salad, and must start over again with the green beans.

Marti, I agree that one of the problems is having to rake and clean up the area after it freezes back in winter. But what really made me remove it was that it grew over the walk so quickly after trimming. I was looking for a picture that I took of Purple heart hanging over a wall at the S.A. Zoo, but instead found this one of where I had it planted. It really looks great in combination with lime green plants. That's a coleus in the pot and a Margarita sweet potato vine in the background. At first it did get water from the run-off in watering the plants in the pots, but later when I didn't replace those plants it grew like crazy even without extra water. Well, there is something positive to be said for that ability in these dry years we're having.

Did you ever have a good presentation just go down the drain? Sometimes, in spite of your best efforts and thorough preparation, disaster strikes. A few years ago, when the Internet was just beginning to really roll, I gave a class titled, "Gardening On the Internet". It was held in the computer lab of a local college and had a great computer lab. The facilities were wonderful with many independent stations and huge monitors which made it perfect for several students to work together at any station. I made arrangements with the professor and even did a dry run several days before class to get familiar with the facilities. I was prepared! In addition, I was assured by the professor that he would be just outside the lab in his office should any questions come up. I was really pumped and eager. I arrived at the computer lab about an hour and a half early just to make sure everything was ready and maybe run through my presentation just one more time before class began. Strangely, the doors were all locked. Hmm... The professor was nowhere to be found. The janitor assured me that the professor was ALWAYS there -- maybe just out to lunch. The clock was ticking and I began to make some phone calls ... then more phone calls. Time seemed to be flying by. I FINALLY got a hold of the professor by phone. He regretfully told me that he had just had a death in the family and was leaving town -- as I was peering out the window watching several more students show up for class. I was finally able to convince a janitor that the frantic madman he was talking to was supposed to be allowed into the computer lab. I turned on the lights and assured my bewildered students that all was fine. Of course, that was BEFORE I realized that the computer system that the good professor assured me would be up and running was locked out with a password. By some fate of the gods, one of the college students sauntered into the room hoping to use the facilities. Remembering the devious nature of college students (like I used to be), I asked this guy if he might just, by any slim chance, happen to know the password? By curiously cocking his head with that giveaway twinkle in his eye he said he "would see what he could do". BINGO! Not wasting a single keystroke, he broke into the system as I stuffed a ten dollar bill into his pocket and told him I knew nothing. Class was actually proceeding pretty well ... that is until I realized that two of the stations didn't work. My savior with the password was still on site, working in a room adjoining the lab. I asked him if he knew anything about the two stations that didn't work -- they worked fine just two days ago when I checked everything out. "Oh, yeah. Those two stations blew-out their mother boards today." reported my hacking savior. Thank God that class finally ended! IronBelly

Susieq07, We haven't been able to get around to painting the house and the added DIY sunroom yet but you've given me something to think about regarding the color/trim etc! Great fresh look you have going with the plants/house color! Thank you all for the encouragement. Don't want to start a whole new thread since this one is here and you've all explained your wonderful yard/landscape and Susie already added her pics so I'll just add mine here. Keep in mind, this was Budget Decorating! Mr. Amity laid all the cement (except for the faux cobblestone steps leading up to the Pav.) a few squares every weekend and he (with my Dad's supervision hehehe) put up the Pav. I created all 5 raised rock gardens with the rocks, we as a family collected over the years from Mt. Baldy day trips. Lots and lots of great memories in those raised rock gardens. I had emailed our own SquirrelH about suggestions for front yard landscaping but alas, that has been put on hold with all the funds going to the bath redo and all the water damage and mold we found AFTER we got started with the bathroom demo. Here are some before and afters of the back. Nothing formal, but I'm really enjoying my new place of serenity. Before. This area was an 18 ft. round x 5 ft. deep above ground pool for all the years the kids were growing up. The last kid hadn't looked at the pool in 2 years so we decided to take it out and make ourselves a nice garden area. That got put on hold when my elderly (even more elderly than us! LOL) parents came to live with us 3 years ago. Rusted metal shed for storage as we took in more kids, now used to help store some of parents' belongings and my own stuff now that we've turned my living room into their bedroom. Yucca plant in the corner that seemed to grow over night. During demo of 3 rooms (to give us living area/closet space/storage when parents moved in) the old pool area ended up being a place to dump the demo trash until we got enough demo'd stuff to fill/rent a slide-off dumpster. During. Got the area semi-cleared out. Yucca removed-Yipppeeee! Mr. Amity started by priming/sealing/painting the metal storage shed. After. We did our best to hide the metal shed (can been seen behind the waterfall) but now that it's painted I shouldn't have worried so much about hiding it---doesn't look half bad with a new coat of paint! I still need to get up there and paint out the Misters water line. And I still need to finish painting the faux stone and grouting around the waterwall/bench. I'll get 'roundtoit, eventually. *smile*

I've been playing outside too, trying to get beds ready for more spring planting. I have still have 100+ plants in pots waiting to be planted.

My entire yard is a garden, so I've been trimming back dead foliage and pulling some weeds and generally cleaning up so I won't waste any valuable planting time come spring.

Now is also a great time for us to transplant trees and I have some growing in the wrong place, so they're on my to-do list.

I'm in the process of turning a flower garden into an edible garden. And I see my lavender and rosemary are still green. I've added to my list to buy some more of those. Gotta have 'em.

This is the mildest winter I remember. And I'm loving it! I even have a canna sprouting!

Good morning!
We are having another upper 40 degree day. If I didn't have so much still left to do in the house, I would get out and rake off a few bulb beds to se if anything is popping it's wee little head out yet.

Butterfly, I too still have plants in nursery pots waiting to be planted. Hopefully with this mild winter, they have survived OK.

We had quite a short winter here too from mid Nov. - mid Dec. It's been quite mild since then.

Judy - How is your WSing coming along? I have just a few little green sprouts so far. Thought they needed a drink Friday, so I watered them. Saturday, it rained all day long!
LoL. Must of thought I was doing a rain dance or something that day, smiles.

I've been collecting tropicals all winter - propagating, buying, trading. I can't wait to start planting either. Only 3 or 4 weeks now - the danger of frost is gone here at the end of Feb.

I am so itching to get back, But I have this big problem!!!! Mother Nature is playing this big joke on zone 5, My daff's & crocus & all that are coming up... They need to slow down, as I know I have 3 more months of VERY COLD!!!! Help. I need mulch!!!!!!:)Anita

The daffys are always up at this time of year here. It's just we usually don't see them with the snow cover. But Mother Nature is about to fix that this weekend. Looks like we've got a possible nor'easter coming. Possible 8-12 inches of snow for the Poconos. Stupid groundhog!!

What winter? lol! Crocus started to bloom already and the daff's are about to. Roses and apple trees are showing buds all over. Spring is here!!

Oh Pam, my heart and spring thoughts goes out to you. That is ALOT of snow. Didn't'cha just know that winter would hit us hard right at the end!!! That groundhog need to stay in his hole if he can't cooporate! LoL.
