Split-rail Fence

late-bloomer

My Spring landscaping project for this year was an old fashioned split-rail fence. I have a lot of locust trees on my property so I cut and split them by hand using a maul and wedges-- Abe Lincoln style. This type of fence was quite common in pastures and abandoned farmland around here (N.W. PA) when I was a kid but most of them have disapeared. No one makes these anymore and after doing this I can see why! I managed to make around 350 rails before quiting for the summer. That was enough to do my backyard. I hope to finish the project next Spring.
