Monster Cosmos

I was wondering if anyone could explain what I call "my monster cosmos". This Spring I planted a little 8'x 16' raised bed with my usual mix of veggies and some cutting flowers( to pretty things up) in my somewhat sunny front yard. Short rows of cactus flowered zinnias, liliput zinnias, bordered by a row of Wave petunias . Just behind the petunias I planted a packet of Bright Lights Cosmos , not my first experience with Cosmos I've planted them for years, saved seeds in the past ect. So We had some deluges before my seeds could germinate and hold in place and they got mixed a little and some washed away. Three of my Cosmos came up an began to grow , I'm expecting knee high plants covered in orange and orange red inflorescences by mid summer ,and grow and grow . August 15th two of these plants are seven feet tall and the stalks are 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter and not a flower in sight. I was beginning to wonder what sort of creature I had here,I am pretty knowledgeable about the local wild flora and they didn't look like anything but "COSMOS". They finally started to flower the first week of October And they are covered in orange "COSMOS" flowers. A storm blew one down it rooted all along the big stem and is covered in flowers. The one that is still standing is fully 9' tall and the trunk is 2" in diameter. What are they ??
