Ouch! I did something similar once - left mother-in-law's birthday gift in a recycling bag, then put the recycling out late one night while on heavy-duty pain pills, and sent momma's gift right to the recycling center!

I've planted daffodils in late December before and it's been fine. Just yesterday, I finally had time to put in some tulips and daffodils. The ground wasn't frozen, so hopefully it will be OK. Certainly better than leaving the bulbs to sit around. Some of the tulip bulbs were getting a little icky, not sure all of them will pull through. But daffodils are really tough.

I planted dozens of daffodils in late December several years ago. They came up fine! Tulips may not do as well. I don't think tulips get enough chill time around here anymore. 20 years ago, my tulips came back every year. Now, 2 years and they're gone. I've given up on them.

Early doubles such as 'Abba' can be planted 'very late' and still come up to flower.

If the bulbs themselves are still plump and glossy then you've probably got a chance. I'd probably plant less deeply than usual but I know I don't get frosts like yours.

Some of them will do well and be fine for following years while others will either vanish or split into lots of littles which may or may not grow on to flowering size. :-( It's worth taking a note of which varieties were good performers in your conditions - and your disasters. For example, me 'n' parrot tulips have a love/hate routine running at present - dead tulips 2, me 0. ;-)

What a tragedy to see even your tulips going by the wayside due to warming. keep composting! plug in those cf light bulbs! do something! Save the polar bears. I have to stop pushing it out of my thoughts and take steps even though the problem IS overwhelming.

Oh Lisa, that is just terrible! I hope your new bulbs can help heal the hurt.
I shoveled snow off my garden in Wisconsin the second week in
December, the top 2 inches were frozen but the ground was OK under that- planted different Allium, and Lilies, that all looked great the next year.

Had great success with bulbs planted here in January 2008: daffodils and tulips came up as though planted in November!

I just went through my inventory and discovered I only had a problem with late planted tulip bulbs which had a fungus. Last winter I planted 17 varieties, 6 to 11 weeks late (should have been planted in mid-September while I planted from November to December 6th). They have all just bloomed perfectly. I was only disappointed by Meissner Porzellan (small flowers of insignificant color and plants of uneven size) and had almost complete failure with Page Polka (only 20% bloomed). I recall those bulbs were quite dried up and covered with fungus when I was planting them. All other tulips, even though they had all sprouted and dried up a bit before getting planted, bloomed just fine.

I hope you had as much pleasure from your tulips this spring as I had from mine. I had people stopping and commenting on how beautiful they were. And I loved them, too. Every day first thing in the morning I would walk to the window to take a look at them.

Of new purchases, tulips that I had never seen before, I especially liked Blushing Lady - very tall, warm pastel yellow with pink blush, very large flowers with long petals rounded at the ends, opens wide but doesn't go completely flat, blends nicely with other pastel or warm colors, and Toyota - great shade of warm red with a thin cream edge - just lovely. They have rather small flowers which hardly open. They look much, much better than in the pics from googling images. Also Black Hero looked nice en masse with Queen of the Night.

I will not be lifting that many this June as I had adequate blooms from most tulips I hadn't lifted (because there were just too many..) Exception: Blue Heron, but those were sort of weak in their first year as well. So I will only be lifting the varieties I want to plant elsewhere due to esthetic reasons.
