I think the reason you didn't get more response to this thread, is that your community garden is a little different than is typical. Since it's for a daycare, it's family oriented, and more tolerant of children.

I've rented a plot at a community garden for the past two years, and they don't exactly encourage you to bring children. In fact, on the form you sign when you rent your plot it says that if you bring children with you, that they are to be closely supervised, and not allowed in other people's plots. I have three children, and it was certainly easier to get what I needed done at the garden when I was by myself. There was only one other renter that had children, and she usually made her kids stay in the car while she was there.

I'd love to hear back from you about how it turns out. I've always thought it would be great to have a veggie garden at my kids elementary school. It could be used to teach basic biology lessons, and to teach them how to be good stewards of the earth. I know there are kids in my children's classes that don't even recognize some vegetables, and I'm in a somewhat rural area.

We have had a 4-H garden at a daycare since 2000. There are school age kids (K thru grade 4 or 5) almost all day in the summer and afterschool until about 6 in the afternoon. I get a little help to prepare in the spring, but all of the planning, planting, care and harvesting is done by the kids. The garden is 40foot on each side with raised beds for about 90 percent. the rest is meandering flowers and seating area.
One thing that always surprises me is that a lot of adults do not know anything about gardening. I have taught "classes or workshops" for the kids and it is the adults who ask what the difference is between a hoe and a fork. I have found that if you teach to the kids the adults learn as well -rather than teaching to the adults and the kids do not learn.
We have done both individual family plot and whole school garden to share. At our daycare having the whole school works best because there were families who did not consistently care or harvest and the things went to waste. Thinning plants was something that new gardeners hated to do. The kids were willing at least to do research with thinning and leaving part of a row unthinned.
We also have a sampling of a lot of different kinds of fruit - enough for everybody to eat a lot when in the garden, but not enough to take out. Kids love to plant and like to do things with parents.
It is a very worthwhile thing to do. I have done very little formal teaching, but the kids learn by doing and I have some bug,weed and botany books there at the garden to be ready for the teaching moment.
