I don't have an earthway and didn't want to use the one DH uses to lime the lawn so I just did it by hand. We'll see how it goes - just enough area for 2 burlap bags to cover. BTW, I covered the carrots, beets, and chard I seeded with burlap so that any potentially heavy rains don't wash them out, Dill and basil just got some old (left out all winter) hay. I figured I could take the burlap off this weekend, and if it wasn't wet I could water. We didn't get much rain last night and none yet today. I did not water the seeds in figuring it was best not to if rain was coming (or if rain came last night and then it was hot and dry the next few days. Any problems? To add a little something from 2010 . . . lettuce has just been a continual "thing" this year. Sowing seed in containers and setting out transplants has gone on without a break. So far, there has been no actual failures. The plants don't get a lot of time. They are harvest young . . . or, lost. They are set out and grow together as "pinches" of plants -- about 6 plants together. Leaf lettuce types in a mix are grown together and often harvested together. My Senposai was planted a little too close together. Altho' there was a nice mess or 2 of the greens - very tender - they weren't thinned enuf this year to enable them to grow to their potential. Consequently, they bolted while still small and were all pulled this week. If you grow the critters, realize that they can take up about as much room as small cabbages. Early thinning is required if they are grown closer together. I'm not sure what to think about summer '10 here. Even tho' there's been some 90° days and one more promised for tomorrow -- this may be one of our summers when getting to 100° doesn't happen. Certainly, spring was a good salad season but with continual transplanting, the entire growing season may turn out that way. It's kind of too bad. Hot dry weather is when you want to enjoy a cool salad most. Oh well, it is hot and dry at the moment and there's salad! Steve

Newbies are generally the legit posters who add to old threads like this (though I've occasionally had one where I missed the date, myself). And perhaps scared away when they get jumped on. The spammers usually haven't read the other posts and are off target, and have outside links, or merchandise recommendations. I wait for the actual spam to judge. Everybody has to have a first post somewhere. But Sushipup has a good point. I haven't seen it, but maybe the trick is to add outside info later. Like maybe MT is shilling new packaging, Anyway, in answer to your question, I was just trying to point out the potentially innocent ways old threads get revived. We all know the self serving versions.

Those look great LG! I was one of the pessimistic people on your original thread. As it turned out I think I could have probably gotten away with planting out lettuce in mid January with the mild winter we've had. I may go ahead and start some lettuce to plant in containers early so I can bring them into the garage if needed. I still have 18 Muir and Rhazes lettuce plants under lights that were started in early/mid January. I've been harvesting a plastic grocery bag full weekly since Christmas but the plants are getting long in the tooth and root bound now so I'll harvest one more time and then toss them on the compost. I need the space under the lights for the Brassicas I stated this weekend.
