Hits and Misses 2011

I don't recall seeing the annual Hits and Misses thread this year...if we have one going already - well, hey.

I'll start...

Hits:

* Pentas: Wasn't so sure about them at first, but once they took off they filled out beautifully into healthy green mounds topped with flowers the butterflies loved. I got the lilac color (which is a light blue-based pink), which is not easy to find, but fit it nicely with my color scheme. Definitely going to grow next year.

* Zinnias: Not new to me but have not planted in large plantings before. I am *thrilled* with them! I planted "Bernary's Giant Purple" and "Uproar Rose" and they were joyous!

Eh:

* Lantana: Stayed healthy and flowered nicely once got going and no trouble in terms of upkeep, but the flowers didn't thrill me - nice but eh. Maybe will grow again, maybe not.

Misses:

* Angel Wings begonia: I just didn't like it. It grew okay and stayed healthy, but I just didn't like it - what else can I say :0\

Nothing else new to me this year. Was disappointed in my heliotrope - don't know what was going on with that this year...just didn't want to get going until now, September, when they are finally filling out and blooming nicely :0/ .

Hits: Zahara Yellow zinnias. Beautiful cool yellow on mounding, continuously blooming plants. Did not flop.

Black Pearl Peppers en masse. The hotter it got, the more beautiful they were and are. The foliage stayed really, really black and the lavender blooms were beautiful and fresh looking. Now the black peppers are turning brilliant red. Gorgeous plant. No insects, no disease. Just beautiful. Everyone who comes on my property asks about them.

Profusion Zinnias, Fire: Planted right in front of the Black Pearl Peppers. Cut back in mid Summer and they came right back out with water and fertilizer. I can't wait for the children to see my "Halloween" bed at my front door.

Lime Queen Zinnia: Exactly what I expected Envy to be. It's a beautiful cool chartreuse and did not fade in the heat of summer. WINNER.

Zinnia Zowie Flame: Words cannot describe. This was my favorite new plant this year. They don't even get sun all day long and they completely lived up to their press.

Misses:
Aztec Sunrise Zinnias: Not awful. Not great. The flower color combinations were interesting, but they were small and there was not a big enough mass of any one to make a real show. Plus, the plants flopped, big time. Cannot hold a candle to Zaharas or Profusions.

Enchantress Zinnias: A pretty, lavender/pink, tall Elegans type. The plants were tall and gawky looking. I cut them back and they came right back: gawky. The blooms were beautiful, but the color was wishy washy in the heat of summer. I'm going to try Uproar Rose next year. Still, no disease problems. In a cooler climate and the right setting, they might be great.

Zahara Rose Zinnia: Faded just as badly as Profusion Rose. I love the color, but I'm done for my climate until the breeders make some improvements.

Hits:

Pentas "New look series": compact plants, very heat tolerant, flower clusters don't wither quickly

Gomphrena "Strawberry fields": longest blooming annual, drought & heat tolerant, attract loads of butterflies, requires minimal care

Zinnia "Magellan": the best zinnia ever, huge fully doubled blooms, self branching, need no staking.. Pink and Coral tops the other colors..

Zinnia "Profusion double mix": they just grow and bloom, cuttings are easily rooted, a single plants spreads about two feet.

Celosia crisata "Prestige Scarlet": bright and lovely color, produces multiple heads, comes true from seed, self-seeds easily..

Portulaca "Sundial": largest blooms, remain open till evening, bees love them..

Misses:

Gaillardia "Arizona Apricot": Slow grower, blooms wither in 2 days maximum.. lets see how it performs during our mild winters.

Sunflower "Teddy bear": blooms fade and form seeds very quickly, only one or two branches per plant..

Celosia plumosa "Kimono mix": bloom fades quickly, plants are variable in height and bloom quality.

We've had a lot of local tragedy this holiday season and no one has been feeling very holiday-ish. Our usual foodfest/staff party was postponed until January, and I had to work a lot and so didn't get very creative. Christmas Eve dinner was a POOFed hunk of leftover ham, a nice asparagus casserole, baked potatoes and three-layer cornbread. All good, but unremarkable. We went to The Kid's for Christmas Day and she put together a nice brunch. She's newly gluten-free and made a really good cranberry/apple cake. Came home and made a very excellent frittata with the last of the ham. My miss AND hit this year was those darn caramel cheetos. I wanted to make some Goose Poop for our Storytime kids and messed up the recipe. The first time I made them I used margarine and thought they were a bit oily so I decided to try butter. After they were in the oven, realized I'd left out half the butter. This time they were amazingly good...light, crispy coating. Addicting. It was fun watching people's reactions when they tried them. Doubt...raised eyebrows...then, "Oh. Wow." And they'd always reach for more, hehe.

Apple Cider Pound Cake....from our local Freecycle food post. Best cake I ever tasted. Apple Cider Pound Cake * 3 cups sugar * 1-1/2 cups butter, softened * 6 eggs * 3 cups all-purpose flour * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 1/2 teaspoon baking powder * 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon * 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice * 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg * 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves * 1 cup apple cider * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract * ICING: * 1/2 cup sugar * 1/4 cup butter, cubed * 1/4 cup buttermilk * 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract * 1/4 teaspoon baking sodaDirections * In a large bowl, cream sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir together all dry ingredients; set aside. Combine cider and vanilla. Add dry ingredients alternately with cider mixture to batter. Mix until well blended. Spoon into a greased 10-in. angel food cake pan or fluted tube pan. * Bake at 325 degrees F for 1 hour 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. * Meanwhile, combine icing ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. While cake is warm, drizzle half of icing over cake. Serve remaining icing over individual cake servings if desired.

A friend of mine always has a few people over every year for the Super Bowl. Until this past year she lived in a very large home with 4 standard poodles, which are very large, bouncy, athletic dogs. Usually the group is small and everyone is a football fan, whether or not our team is playing. She's moved to a much smaller home but still has the 4 rambunctious dogs. This time there were 5 of us, all women, and 3 didn't know a thing about football. I had to explain the concept of downs and why sometimes penalties are declined. The louder the talk, the louder the tv, rinse, repeat. One of the intact male poodles wanted to get it on with me. I decided martinis are not for me.

In the repair business, it's always critical to find out who screwed up what, because if a customer screws something up, her standards for an acceptable repair are considerably lower than if someone else did it. With lowered expectations, your chances of collecting are greater. Your posts are always fun. These characters, almost teenagers, toed the "that's our story and we're sticking to it" line to great unpunished success. I can't say I blame them, it worked, but as to what they did to cause the damage remains unknown. I teach teens, and it's amazing what their parents will believe. Examples: - In parent conferences, I've pulled up the computer program to which kids turn in homework ... showed them that their kid turned in only 3 of 10 assignments ... and I've had parents accuse me of deleting the kid's work. - I've seen kids cheating on tests, shown the tests to their parents, shown them that the kid copied someone else's work word-for-word, even down to the mispelled words and placement of wording on the paper ... and the parents'll scream that their kid doesn't lie, doesn't cheat. - I've heard my principle say he's had kids on camera doing something wrong, and the parents'll say, "No, that's not Johnny" when it's very clearly Johnny on the tape! I always think, "Good luck. Raise your kid this way, and you'll get exactly what you deserve." If I were building a fast food joint, I'm pretty sure I'd go with stainless steel. That's just disgusting looking. Absolutely. These people made a bad, bad choice. This was fun to read, but I have a serious question: I lean towards granite countertops ... what choices would lead towards the most sturdy /least likely ever to call upon your Carolina counterparts for repairs? I'm thinking that a part of the answer is, Multi-colored and mid-tone, neither white nor too dark.

...and the biggest miss: Zinnia "Queen Red lime".. worst color for a flower.. almost like a faded zinnia... the only annual which I uprooted at its prime..

I didn't do alot of different annuals this year, instead I did alot of a few annuals. The ones I was happiest with were "Purple Gnome" Gomphrena, "Hummingbird Red" Salvia and Melampodium.

"Serena" Angelonia grew and flowered fine, they just didn't excite me as much as they have in previous years. Vincas also grew well and didn't turn that sickly yellow color they often do. They just don't thrill me anymore. The white and light pink gomphrenas that came in a mixed market pack seemed blah in comparison to the purple ones.

As for the misses, portulaca only bloomed sporadically and were kind of ratty looking most of the time. "Profusion Yellow" Zinnias did well and didn't mildew, but were a little too neon yellow for my taste. "Graffiti White" Pentas were disappointing. The white ones didn't seem to bloom nearly as well as the red ones I had last year.

I think it may have to do with the weather this year, but all my petunias were just blah! I did try a couple new kinds, Wave Plum Vein and Wave Neon Rose. I usually just do Wave Blue (which were not as good this year as others).

What I loved:
