I have a book on bulbs here and it says that the most prolific of daffodils needs to be divided every five to six years. Some daffs are slower to increase, in which case you can also just divide them every decade or so. I grow Mount Hood, this is the second year they will bloom and already the flowers on each bulb have tripled and there are bulbils in sight as well. I might have to divide mine every four years... I guess it is best that you keep a journal for your daffs and monitor closely how much they increase each year. If you have trouble seeing how more new growth could come up in the limited space between this year's growth, that would be a sign that it is time to divide. I can't find the bit about when to divide these, but I gather all bulbs are best divided during dormancy, which would mean any time between the moment the leaves fall off and the moment the ground freezes, although I think earlier is better. I think that fall is a bad idea because by then, the plant may have grown more roots that reach deeper, and it will be that much harder to lift them, plus the new root growth would be wasted and it wouldn't have enough time to regenerate properly by next spring. But this is just my admittedly not perfect logic speaking. I would try to do it as soon as the leaves fall off. That way, you do it before new growth starts but after the plant is done producing for the current year. It would then be about to start using its gathered reserves to grow new roots, so your newly transplanted daff would be nicely nestled into place by the time spring comes.

Well, I didn't prune the two older ones (Bartlett Pear and Honeycrisp) any more than I did last year, which is to say, lightly-to-moderately pruned and they flowered fine last year... and I BARELY pruned the two younger apple trees, since they did not have much growth to begin with.... I just can't imagine how I would have pruned off every single branch with flowering capability on 4 different trees, unless I really pruned them super heavily, which I didn't. The Honeycrisp apple got the most pruning this year, but I followed various tutorials and felt I was actually probably not taking enough off. But I am new to this so I guess I could be wrong! In any case, the other 3 only got very lightly pruned. And, no, no flower buds ever showed up at all. I have to get my yard ready for a delivery of 10 tons of gravel thats on its way, but I'll try to take some photos later on so you can see how much I pruned.

No, gracie, though in the initial growing season plants often expend energy on roots to become re-established and little/no energy setting future flower buds. This is quite a variable situation given the many ways plants are purchased, installed, and the type of sites they occupy. And no, kaypea, failure to bloom has nothing to do with pollination; failure to fruit has everything to do with lack of pollination. Rather than recycling all of it, I recommend you read (take coffee, No Doz, screaming children, ahead of time) the following link for some clarity on viburnums and pollination. It's long, but it says a lot that you may find useful. Mostly, you both just need another clone/cultivar of V. dentatum that overlaps in bloom time with the V. dentatum you currently have. Citrus grown from seeds may take anywhere from 3 to 10 years to bloom, depending on the variety. I'm not educated as to how long each variety can take. They have an internal clock which tells them when they are old enough to bloom. I grew a Key lime from seed about 4 or 5 years ago. Two years ago I had 3 blooms, no fruit. Last year I had 20 or 30 blooms and one lime which eventually dropped off. This year the tree was full of blooms, had lots of limes and many fell off when I didn't water but I have a dozen which are ripening now. It has just re-bloomed and is setting new fruit. My Ponderosa lemon bloomed the second year and set a bumper crop of fruit the third year. Because it came from a cutting, the internal clock thought it was mature enough to bloom. I'm not sure where you are located but I would fertilize with Miracid about every 2-3 months and with Epsom salts to encourage blooms. It is about time that your tree gives you a big surprise.
