2 questions

first== does anyone know if i can buy english first early seed potatoes in usa as i miss my uk spubs.

and if not i got family in england would they be able to sent me some from there ?.

Is "first early" even quicker than merely "early", because we have plenty of early varieties. I have little doubt that non-certified seed cannot be sent overseas, they are not even allowed across the border between Canada and the US.

There are variants of late blight present in Europe that are not currently in the U.S. The current law prohibits import of potatoes in an effort to prevent them from being brought in.

The International Potato Center is able to ship in varieties in test tubes. They are all tissue culture sterile varieties. Even then, you need an import permit to bring them in.

There are plenty of varieties here in the U.S. that would probably meet your tastes. Please post the names of some you are interested in from Europe and let us see if some of us can suggest some alternates that are available here.

I have called almost everywhere in a 50+ mile radius. I am having no luck. The place I have got them locally just got a new manager. I also usually go and ask them to order them. This year I forgot to do this. Double Whammy! I won't forget that for next year. I already wrote it on the calendar. Farmerdilla- I didn't have any disease, that I know of. Thanks for info. If I did plant them, some have some really long sprouts, 2-12 inches. Do I just break them off and they will regrow? Do I just find some that are smaller? I have grown lots of potatoes, just always from new seed potatoes every year. Thanks, Jay

Alisher - can you tell us which country you are going to? Is it in Europe, Africa? Asia? 3 reasons I ask: lots of places in Europe you can get imported sweet potatoes in the supermarket veg section even though they don't grow in that country, so you could get slips from those. Secondly, are you sure you can't get plants there? For example Thompson and Morgan and Dobies sell sweet potato starter plants in the UK. And thirdly, are you sure that sweet potatoes will grow where you are going to? For example, here you would need to grow them in a greenhouse. Just some things to consider while you plan your project.

II think you are misunderstanding me misabelle. All I have ever said is that the European forum has been in use for a number of years and all it takes is a little time to read through and see which trades are offered from the UK and exchange with them only is that is what you wish to do. I fully understand the implications of trading plants and seeds for that matter from outside the UK, as I trained as a botanist and now run a thriving rare plant business, so you see I may actually know a little more about this than you seem to give me credit for. Even exchanging plants within the UK can pose a risk, this is one reason why I will never exchange plants with people I don't know and can trust to have very good plant knowledge. I find your last sentence a little 'harsh', perhaps a slighty more friendly approach would have been nicer rather than being so dismissive of an alternative point of view?

I've had no problems with UK customs or otherwise in receiving quantities of heirloom seeds in the UK from US friends. Indeed, there are no significant problems with posting garden seeds throughout the EC. Problems arise, as you know, when mailing seeds into the US (plus Australia and several other nations). The phytosanitation laws have been sharply enforced in the US since around 2006. This is not so much to keep out disease, which is rarely found on garden seeds properly prepared, but to block the importation of invasive weeds. Nor does it help to smuggle seeds into the US in hollowed out copies of Sherlock Holmes. US Customs have now become wise to this. It is more effective, I find, to slip them between the pages of Edgar Allen Poe's The Purloined Letter :)

The US Postal Service has delivered a nice myriad of pests and diseases to California via otherwise good-meaning people.

The citrus industry there is now battling huanglongbing because of a church group of plant enthusiasts sharing cuttings of pomelo shipped in from a single member's family in Asia.

A man who thought an Indian (the country) stick bug would make a neat pet for his son has led to this pest wreaking havoc upon parts of Southern California. It's not like our more common "stick bugs"...this one can get up to 6 inches long and a crew can take out a garden overnight. They reproduce heavily when they have a lot to eat.

We gotta be careful about this kinda stuff.

It's a big reason there's not a ferry service between the individual Hawaiian Islands. The spread of invasives and it's impact upon animal/agriculture on the different islands is enough of a concern to keep a ferry out of the equation. Some islands have mongoose, some don't. Some have invasive morning glory species, some don't. etc etc...

ty all for you input,
i am looking for the (new potato taste i miss as i am from england )potatoes that have thin skins and when boiled stay firm,like the ones in the link below ,if anyone (ty fusion)knows of usa varieties that could match any of them i be appreciated , i love fingerlings ones i grown here and yukon gold and a few ones but cannot get that (new early taste of uk potatoes)
