Peruvian Daffodil did it bloom in your zone 5?

This was a walmart purchase.

I thought it would bloom but it never did.

We are going to frost tonight so ...it's over for this year.

I'm pondering if these can't workout here or if my bulbs were too small?

I suppose I'll have to store them in the basement and try again next year.

Any experience with these on zone 5 or a short season garden?

I've had these in pots in zone 6 for 10 years....they mulitply very rapidly and I started with 2 and now have several hundred so watch out!!! The bulb will get as big as your fist when mature so yours is likely a baby. They are also not completely reliable bloomers every year in my zone anyway.....they bloom early in the summer just after the leaves emerge for me, but I can have 20 monster bulbs and 40-50 offsets in a giant tub and only get a half-dozen or so flower spikes. This goes for the standard white x festalis and the yellow 'Sulpher Queen' form. Here are a couple of mine:

They are worth waiting for as they are beautiful and smell heavenly :o) Dan

I have the white x festalis and the sulpher queen; the white has never bloomed for me in the three years I've had them but the yellow has bloomed reliably for all three. Mine are in containers on my patio. The bulbs definately multiply so will keep trying with the white.

The new computer files all pictures by the date. The dates are all nonsense. It seems to be something made up in collusion with the camera (LOL). The old computer let me file wherever I liked. I would upload then tranfer or copy pictures into folders with the kind of plant, etc. This one makes everything go in a folder with that date. I can rename the picture (though I never seem to do them all, maybe I just take too many) and I do, but finding it again is a problem: when I close it goes back into a mythical date folder. Your suggestion, Ken, gives me the idea of putting the date as part of the title. That would at least solve part of the problem. I donÂt upload all that often either so might not remember the date I took it, but I could be close. There is probably a sort function which I need to explore too. What I really need to do is take the time to figure the system out and make it do what I want, which I have not done. ItÂs probably some default setting I need to uncover and change. I should start keeping a log. I did, of bloom times, but never did one for emergence. I did mean true lilies, Lilium, I should have been specific. Asiatics-orientals-orienpets-etc. My daylilies, my hemerocallis, are already up. There is enough left at the surface that I never worry about where they are. ItÂs the true lilies that do weird things sometimes like send up a stem at an angle, not above the bulb, that I have to worry about. In the last few years I have bought so many that they are shoehorned in all over the place. I tagged everything last fall but about Â¼ are missing. Some squirrel must have built himself a nice house of plastic knives. Nice to "see" you on here too, Ken! Pitimpinai is a little south of me. If she sees hers in mid-April it'll probably be mid-April for me too. Thanks, everyone.

My roses made it through our mild winter with very little dieback. My problem was deciding how much to prune, since they didn't really need to be pruned. And I did not provide any winter protection this year. Rosenut, I have bushes that the rabbits ate almost to the ground, but I'm not giving up on them. I had two Betty Boops last year that I almost dug up because the rabbits ate them up. I kept them and they were just fine. Charlie, my mom has two fairy roses that have never bloomed and they are going on their fourth year. I'm hoping she will let me get rid of them, but she keeps hoping they will bloom.

I did loose a few of the cultivars once, so I made raised beds within the raised beds.... little half circles of stone (which I do for some irises also) that are raised a few inches above the beds (which in rainy places get compacted and kind of sink a bit again and get very compacted in some areas). This has worked quite well for me. If we are having weather like we are now having (super cold, days on end) I layer on the pine straw thick and that keeps 'em dry, if we are going to get rain at that time, I throw large black garden pots over the bulbs and weigh 'em down with a rock over the middle hole. No water gets in there. It's not decorative and it won't work for large stands of amaryllis, but this does the trick when needed. I have some larger stands of amaryllises and I keep those under the drip line and mulch well and plant in this compost from the County which is very well draining. That seems to work ok. Yes, fussier than some stuff I bother with but SO PRETTY!

Thanks, Mone. I saw a species henryi on the south side of the house yesterday. That's like a zone 6 microclimate. I planted some bulbs very carefully yesterday, inching my way down through the soil. For all I know they may be "cheek by jowl" with an existing bulb, but at least they are in. I potted up the sprouted lilies I bought a few weeks ago and had them in a sunny window in the basement. When I checked yesterday the asiatics had shot up over a foot tall! I put the pot outside, but still am not sure what to do with them. They would be harder to plant this way, so maybe potting them was a mistake. But they had too-long sprouts and I didnÂt know what else to do. The orientals I potted are still short, no more than 1-2 inches.

I also have the white. Some bloomed this year. What is the best way to keep them over the winter. I have heard so many ways, I want to hear from people that really grow them.

they areare among our favorites. We have a half dozen or so bloom every year in our zone 3 garden. We dig up and store the bulbs indoors. Your non-blooming isn't due to a short season as ours bloom in July.

Well if they can make a bloom in zone 3 for alpiner then mine are just too small. The bulbs are now larger than a golf ball. Or maybe it just wasn't their year, if they don't bloom every year. Sadly I stuck the shovel right thru one :-0
So that leaves me with just one to store and try for next year.

Question I also had the same experience. Nice foliage but no blooms. In my case I think it was due to late planting. My cultivar is called 'Advance'. I wonder what is the best way to save for next year? Should I let the frost get the foliage and then move the pot and bulbs to unheated basement or remove the bulbs from the pot and store?

I toss them pot and all in the basement before the first frost....the next spring they are typically starting to push a leaf before they get back outside. These bulbs can get as big as my fist so golf ball size is still quite small. Even the one you cut in half you should save. As long as both parts have some bulb plate they will likely both grow and be fine....you have just increased your numbers!! I have not heard of 'Advance', but there are likely huge numbers of these I have not heard of :o) Dan
