Stop cutting the leaves. I hope that you didn't them all, or even most of them. That's what creates the energy that the bulb stores to rebloom. Break the vase (if you must) and repot the entire thing, new bulb leaves and all. Never cut green leaves off of an amaryllis. If you don't like the way it looks with the leaves, put it out in the yard or fire escape where it gets light but you can't see it until it starts to get cold in your area. It will not rebloom if you remove the leaves. You don't need to separate the new forming bulbs that are sending up leaves. Just break the vase and repot the entire thing with some potting mix in a larger pot. Even if you bloom them in water, you still have to plant them in soil afterwards, so you were right to add dirt. Give it some fertilizer too.

I realize that the leaves are important to new blooms, but I haven't touched them for 9 months. I thought I read somewhere that after 7-9 months of watering and fertilizing that you can cut the leaves to help force new blooms. Maybe I was wrong. I did already cut the leaves that have been there since January because they were anywhere from 3-4 feet long. If I was wrong is there anything else that I can do?

The bulb is still alive, so you've lost one season's blooms at most. Try placing it in a dark cool place, like a cabinet, and leaving it there for a couple of months. Next year, let the leaves die back naturally, and if they don't die back, treat it as a houseplant. Good luck.
