It's Patricia/Tootsie, how are you doing?? Still have your little grandchild? I was so happy, I just knew it was you :) I was at my friends plant exchange party this summer and a gal there gave me some of those bulbs, she said they had already grown early this summer and they would bloom again for me so to hurry up and get them planted!! I did just that early on. She gave me 10 bulbs, but I think most of them were "accidently" tilled under, but I had two that came up and bloomed! I had them in the full sun and they did wonderfully. I was so anxious to see them grow, it seemed like it took FOREVER, I thought perhaps one of those darn moles or some other critter had gotten it!! I will post a picture of mine if I can find it! Things are going well. Wish I knew enough people locally to have a plant exchange party :) Most everyone I know I already have everything they have. I love these particular bulbs, but I sure wish they had bloomed. Maybe something about how dry it was this summer. I received some more in a trade last fall, the foliage came up this spring but no flowers. I really wasn't surprised at that because I know they like to settle in sometimes before blooming. I was very disappointed that the others didn't bloom. The only ones that bloomed I didn't even notice til they were almost finished. My red spider lilies are getting ready to bloom now though, I like those too :)

A picture of mine just last week. These are in a relatively shaded area. Don't have an answer on spotty blooms. Crowding would come to mind. Disturbance or lack of water/fertilizer.

The above picture is Lycoris sanguinea, hardy to about zone 7.

Lycoris squamigera " naked ladies" is the common name here in the eastern U.S. while the west coast uses that common name for Amaryllis belladona.

In my zone 6 garden, I've grown Lycoris squamigera which is not reliable to flower. Other area gardeners have the same experience. My bulbs took a few years, at least, to settle into the garden. I would not disturb them. Give a liquid fertilizer when the foliage emerges in spring. Pour it right on the foliage. The leaves are up for a very short time.

Thanks Carol. I thought I had read they would not bloom a year or so if I moved them, so I really hesitated to try that. They bloomed last year, but maybe the bud was already there~ But I'll fertilize in the spring as you suggest. I don't tend to fertilize my plants much, & this one was no different. I appreciate the botanical names of these too, it can get so confusing. I had asked last year about the difference in lycoris squamigera & amaryllis belladona, wasn't sure whether it was 2 different plants or the same. So I guess mine are Lycoris since I'm in the east :) I received them in trades & believe I received each under a different name. Didn't matter to me, I really enjoy them-when they bloom!
clbravo-I have a few of those type too, so far, so good. They seem to have multiplied a bit since I planted them, also 2 years ago I think.
