Does anyone here use a greenhouse? Does the sun bake yours?
Comments (3)Howdy, I too have an 8x12 green house. Wish it was larger, or better yet, a solarium built to the house. Inside are larger plants that no longer fit in the house. Citrus, Agaves, a few Aloes, Olive tree, variegated Ginger, and a few other odds and ends. Plants are kept in the gh during winter months..once temps warm up, plants are set outdoors. With utility prices, why pay extra when plants do well outside, not to mention easier to manage...? The first year it was erected, 'December, Christmas present,) on the coldest night of the year, the heater went out. In the process, I lost either 32 or 37 plants which froze. I cried, literally cried. After that dreadful night, we figured the problem and made sure the gas heater was working. We added an electric heater in case something went wrong with the gas again. We also purchased a temp/guage/alarm. The guage displays indoor, outdoor and gh temps and humidity. If temp drops to 45F, the alarm beeps. The guage is kept in the house. Mike, although Feb is cold, 'usually the coldest month of the year,' the sun is stronger and will burn certain plants. I hesitate adding shading since most plants are sun lovers, and eventually adapt to strong rays. During summer, gh temps reaches 117F+. This last summer, especially July, temps rose 140 and higher. Even with two opened vents and the storm/screen door ajar. Although my gh is on the small side, it's great having extra space. Don't know what I'd do without the extra room. It's a great investment, especially for those of us who have, more than a few, plants. lol. Toni...See Moreget rid of the hose reels .... simple irrigation
Comments (15)For those in the northern states, you will want to blow out the piping in fall, so it does not freeze and damage the setup. Any buried pipe needs to be very deep, for year-round water use, so it is lower than the frost depth up here in the cold areas. Should then have a self-draining hydrant, instead of a faucet, so it doensn't freeze above the ground either. For a summer help, the system ken shows would work and be helpful. Just remember that come fall, all the water needs to be removed for pipes. ALL the faucets should have back-flow prevention valves on them. They prevent any siphoning of water, fertlizer, puddles, from being sucked back into the water system, city or well, to contaminate the water supply. VERY IMPORTANT to have the back-flow prevention valves on every faucet outside, keep your water supply protected. Such valves are available at Home Depot type stores in plastic or brass. Plastic are much less expensive, but may need replacing sooner. Still should get a couple years or more out of them....See MoreSelf wind hose reel
Comments (4)LOL - the hoser forum! Too cute! I do have one of those self winding doohickeys and I love it. It kills my back to have to manually wind up a hose reel but letting the power of water do it for me is great! Well worth the money we spent on it. Comments (1)Not a water-powered one, but a battery-powered one from Suncast. It is fabulous. No effort required to wind up the hose, just put foot on the foot pedal and viola! Now, un-winding the hose (any hose) and setting it in place is whole 'nother matter.... Anyway, not sure if they make it anymore, but I have one isimilar to this: Suncast CPLPW100 Powerwind 100' Automatic Garden Reel For 5/8" Hose, Taupe : Target...See Moreoliveoyl3
