Don't feed those things. Let them get what they need from the nitrogen dissolved in rain water and the soil.

What do you say all plants don't need to be fertilized. Many thrive on it, petunias geraniums zina to name a few, especally if grown in containers.

But many many need no fertilizer at all....especially if grown in the ground.
There seem to be a lot of peoplew ho think nothing will grow well unless it has added fertilizer. Check out forests if you don't believe me....or weeds in the roadside ditches.

My soil is untested and, to my thinking, perhaps better than adequate - it supports life. I topdress with my home made compost once a year and do little else. You're always going to get arguments both ways and container gardening presents situations that ground planting doesn't. Container plants are going to use up available nutrients pretty fast and frequent waterings will drain them away also. The conventional wisdom is that morning glories, moon vines, etc. do best in a lean and mean environment - even if grown in a container - and a season of watering and fertilizing would get you great growth but few blooms.

And wouldn't organic fertilizer still be a fertilizer?

High intensity plantings in non native situations probably need to be provided with more than the soil will provide them naturally. This can be done with compost, manures, and natural minerals, or with other products. Container plants, growing in a terrific, fast draining potting mix will certainly have to be fertilized.

In situ, I have found that the use of compost nearly eliminates the need for additional fertilization from any kind of source. In containers, I'll use soluble (packaged) products.

The OP asked what fertilizer to use on plants that "don't like fertilizer". My answer was "none". That all plants don't always need to have added fertilizer.
And my answer still stands. Don't feed those things that work best in lean soil.

I am not in disagreement but just adding to the interesting conversation.

Organic 'fertilizers' qualify for that term, at least how I interpret it. A fertilizer is a product, inorganic or not, that is added to the soil to provide varying levels of nutritional support. Many people like the organic based products because they tend to be slow-release, lower in their percentage of NPK, often have micro-nutrients, and provide fuel for beneficial microorganisms. I use soluble inorganic fertilizers on most of my container plants, especially bonsai, but supplement with some organic products for the minor elements upon occasion. My lawn gets an organic fertilizer, and the perennial beds get nuttin' but compost and mulch.

Rich, if you are growing your plants in the ground, and your soil is reasonably productive, then you probably don't have to worry about fertilizing some of those plants. Especially if you use mulch. If you suspect that your soil is barren, then I'd sure try out your organic products. Just remember that our plants require extra fertilization far less than most people seem to think they do. Less is best, under most conditions.

This year I have taken a different approach. In the past I have grown my morning glorys in plain dirt. I got alot of blooms but at the cost of having kind of sick looking leaves. I like morning glory foliage too. It's beautiful. This year I will have a beautiful rich green plant with those great blooms :)filix.

Report back filix, my experience is there is a lovely green vine with few flowers and those that are there are well hidden by the leaves.,,,,not that a green vine isn't nice.

So far the morning glory's are getting alot of buds. These are in potting soil I made myself. A version of Al's mix "tapla.They are in large plastic containers. The m.g. are huge and very healthy. Mine have never looked that good in 30 plus years of growing them. I know they tend to like lean soil. And when the season gets on don't feed them, and give them less water. I am doing that. There is osmocote nine month controled release fert in there. And I gave them some hydroponic bloom boost " with minors" a couple of times. Nothing else but water. will report back maybe with pics.
