In their natural climate range, the freesias tend to be winter/early spring bloomers. I planted some a few years ago in early spring and they did bloom early summer (took about 3 months), but I needed to keep them shaded as they don't like it too warm. You may still need to be patient. Also one key recommendation that I read about them is that they not be planted too deeply - a couple inches would be the max. Regarding the cannas - they really need heat to get moving (soil temps in the 70° Fs) and absent that, they should be kept fairly dry until they get going, when they will then require quite a bit of water. At this point - your greenhouse is probably fine for the freesias, which like cooler temps, but not good for cannas unless it's allowed to get quite a bit warmer. If you can give the cannas bottom heat, then that may help.

Laura, you don't mention where in Ontario you are, so it is really hard to give advice. It is too soon to plant outside now, where I live in southern Ontario. This week, we are expecting frost in the evenings, although the days are going to be lovely. As Bonnie mentions, start your canna, calla, and dahlia now inside. These can be taken outside during the day, but should be brought back in for the evenings that are cold. I won't be planting in the ground here in Rockwood, until after the full moon at the end of May. I'll be watching the forecast carefully then. Have fun, and enjoy your garden.

Hi Cathy, My garden looked beautiful from all the plants you gave me. I have few variety of sedums, irish moss if you are interested- see my list. You have given me many plants so I don't really need anything for trade. However if you can spare a clump of white calla lilies I would love some if not I will be fine. I would water them real well, then dig taking as much soil with the roots as possible. If you can replant them somewhere else, do that. Or you can put them in pots until they die back naturally in the fall. I have always found that with most bulbs it is best to let them die back naturally and not prematurely remove green foliage that feeds the bulb for the next season.
