Bulbs I don't have to pull? Is it by zone?

Hi,

Last winter was so long up here in Maine that I've decided I need a spring garden. I supposed it would have to consist of mostly bulbs. I've never planted bulbs before so if someone could educate me on the difference between spring and winter bulbs and give me some suggestions on bulbs that I wouldn't have to pull up here in zone 5a - 4b it would be greatly appreciated.

The spring bulb season for you will begin with crocus in maybe February ( if you are lucky!) and scilla....and continue on to daffodils, all kinds of tulips, hyacinths, muscari, dutch Iris, Siberian Iris....
I'm sure there's more...
But all these you would plant in the fall and they would bloom in the spring....and (hopefully) return for years and years!

If you have a small patch of 'woodland' you could add Trilliums and Trollius, Sanguinea and Erythronium, Mertensis, Corydalis, various primulas, Epimedium, Soldanella, and Cyclamen coum for a sheltered microclimate.
And Colchicum for autumn.

(I know I've stretched the definition of 'bulb' - but some of these are too yummy to resist!)

I wholeheartedly agree with this. We actually have a VanZyverden Bulb Warehouse in our town that has fabulous sales twice a year. You would think I could find anything. Nope. Never have I seen crinums other than Ellen Bosanquet. (A lovely one, but it only blooms once a year. Not enough to pay its rent when others bloom repeatedly.) Many of my favorite bulbs I would not have lest I had been given them or traded for them: Snowflakes, Atamasco Lilies, Spider Lilies, zephyranthes (these should be in EVERY southern garden in my opinion! Nothing is easier or gives more show for so little care), Byzantine glads, cammassia, etc.Perhaps it has to do with the difficulty in keeping bulbs fresh. I have read that Snowflakes need to be planted immediately after they are dug. (Exactly how I got mine.) Maybe they are too risky for retailing? I do have to say that I have had great luck with buying bulbs on the internet, both through "catalog companies" like Brent and Beckys or Old House Gardens, AND through E-bay sellers. I can honestly say I have never been disappointed.

that wasnt my point .... the point was that stuff happens.. even with stock that is thought to be reliable in any given zone ... mother nature really lacks a sense of humor when she has a bee in her bonnet ... to mix a bunch of metaphors .... most wont care about a z4 in my example.. it just wont matter... but something though secure.. might not make it ... and its usually the one i prize most ... lol anyway .... i recall once.. discussing this with a very large wholesaler.. complaining about another supplier.. and wondering why the bad labels .. like you ... and his best guess was that supplier A ... had a quarter million tags printed up so many years ago .. and they will be damned.. if they arent going to use them up.. before they print another batch .... and i bet some of this is behind bigboxstore labeling problems ... all speculation.. who knows ... ken
