How to 'bare root' daylilies, iris and peonys

Hi! I'm getting ready to dig out and redo a large old bed (30' x 6') of daylilies, iris and a few peonys...with my work schedule, there's no way for me to dig all this out and amend the soil, sort and replace the bulbs in a couple of days...it could take me a couple of weeks and that's pushing it! I don't want to lose my bulbs and a friend suggested "bare rooting" them as they do for shipping and then repair my bed....Sounds like a good idea but I have no clue how to bare root the bulbs and neither did they! My question is exactly how is this done and how long can I leave the bulbs before I have to get them back in the ground? I've searched for specifics and have found anything from "just throw them out on the ground till you're ready for them" to put them in a bucket of water and keep them wet.....I will be moving them the end of August and need to get my plan down now...any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
