Can you grow plants in pure compost?

I was thinking of planting all my garden in 5 gallon containers, or bigger if I can get them cheap. The cheapest stuff I can buy to fill the containers is pure compost, which I can buy for $8 a cubic yard, really nice stuff made from horse manure and sawdust, completely composted and fine screened. Sand would cost around $45 a cubic yard plus an equal amount for delivery. I used to be able to get perlite for $2 a cubic foot, but the place I got it from isn't answering the phone so probably went out of business, and any other sources charge too much so perlite is out. Vermiculite has gotten very expensive because of the asbestos issue so that is out too. Actually there is something cheaper I could use, which is my almost pure clay soil, so pure I could make pottery or bricks from it.

I read that squash can grow in a compost pile, has anyone ever grown anything in pure compost with nothing else added to it, and how did it turn out? What about mixing clay and compost say half and half?

You might be able to get away with growing in some mix of compost and very coarse sand (1/2 BB size to BB size) if the fines are screened out of the sand, but pure compost or a mix of compost and fine sand will present compaction/water retention issues that would be very difficult to get around. If you decide to try it, sinking the containers into the soil so the drain holes are buried might help employ the native soil as a wick; but, if the soil is as you described (clay) that may not help much either.

Vermiculite wouldn't be the choice for a compost based soil because you already need to be VERY concerned about water retention. Stay away from sawdust - rapid breakdown and soil collapse - nitrogen immobilization.

Pine bark is cheap - why not use it?

I have grown in pure compost in containers. It works, but I don't recommend it. It continues to deteriorate and you'll have a lot of shrinkage in the container. It tends to hold moisture more than is good for a container. If you can mix it with other things, making your own potting soil, that would be best.

I would probably add some fine bark, just to make sure your blueberries don't get wet feet. They do like to stay moist (our challenge here in S. California, besides having to grow them in containers due to our more alkaline soils), but they will love, love, love your peat. Great product, btw. I've included a link below you might find helpful. Good advice above. Just cover the pile a bit, start a temporary pile somewhere and wait it out. Post more pics when you have gourds! I do think it's a gourd plant despite the resemblance of the leaves to beans. The thick stems are easy to distinguish from bean vines, not to mention the flowers and fruit.

I noticed the grain size of soil garden does not have any ill effect on the bulbs. It is a bummer that most of the garden lies in a deep shade in the winter, when the sun is low behind trees, buildings and other construction. The end result is etiolation, and gladiolas are mostly affected because their stem does not stand well against the winter storms. Tulips do well in peat but I don't plant them because they need a much colder winter and the summer is just too hot. My experience shows they can't store enough nutrients and they divide into many tiny bulblets, losing mass overtime. My targeted plants are mainly South-African bulbs, comprising Gladiolus species (not including the hybrids in European gardens), Ixia, Massonia, Geissorhiza and Daubenya. I'm exploring the market for more species. Other bulbs grow in peat and I'm not concerned about finding the correct potting mix. These include Crocosmia, Watsonia, Homeria and Ledebouria. I'm also a member of the Cactus society, and the website has one recipe for cacti. Is that soil good for these bulbs? The soil make-up is: 1x dune sand or fine sand 1x perlite 3x peat 4x ground pumice 1x compost (This amount is for seed-starting, you can add more for mature plants) All five components are readily available.

@Kawagoe(Home of SF 49ers Santa Clara CA) Just seeing this old thread. AnJan's pumice supplier changed they pumice that they use for Quick Dry. It used to be 10% fines. Now it is more like 60% fines and totally useless for gardening. I asked the manufacturer about this and they insisted they made no change. I actually believe they received a different product from their pumice mine supplier and they were totally unaware of it, and have no quality control for particle size. @dbarron How far are you from Idaho? One of the best pumice mines in the country is in Idaho and they have a WIDE selection of carefully screened pumice. Expect to pay about $25 per 50-pound bag of pumice, and about $30 to ship it. While it is not cheap, the fact that they screen and wash the pumice saves you extraordinary amounts of time. You can experiment with particles ranging from sand size (#7), to 1/8 inch (#8), to more traditional gritty mix material that is 3/16" to 1/4". I like to experiment with sand size particles in soil for plants that like a moister well-drained soil, like Aeonium. I use larger particles for normal succulents. I have even been experimenting with using huge 3/8" pure pumice with some caudex plants and Euphorbia.

Using pure compost, clay soil, or any mixture of the two alone as a container mix will likely cause a drainage issue. You should add some kind of drainage material or sink the containers as tapla suggested. Additionally, growing with an excessive amount of organic matter can create high levels of nitrogen which can result in excessive, spindly vegetative growth and reduced flowering.
