When is the best time to divide very congested Narcissus clumps?

Hi all,

A friend of mine just bought a house on my street and he said I'm welcome to take some of the perennials and bulbs out of flower beds that he wants to turn back into lawn. There are some clumps of small Narcissus that have become very congested over the years (since it's on my street I've noticed the change) and now they hardly bloom at all. Maybe only ten blossoms this year out of what must be several hundred bulbs. I know that normally one should wait to divide until midsummer so that the bulbs can grow and gain energy from the leaves, but would it be smarter to dig them right now since they are so congested that they don't really have room to expand and grow? Are bulbs able to extract some energy from their leaves even after you dig them out of the ground?

Thanks,

Steve
