Shumard red oak bonsai

I have 2 red oaks, one is 3 yrs old the other is 2 and they both had the tap root cut in Feb of 2008. The older one is quite tall, about 16-18 inches while the younger is only about 6-8 inches. Neither have branching yet. I don't know what to look for on the taller one to know where to cut it. I was told that I need to cut it, maybe by half, to get the size and branching I want. I current;y have them in seperate, large plastic containers outside. They do extremely well in the hot tx summers and look beautiful in the fall. Where's the best resource to read up on such things, or can someone here help? Thanks very much!
