'trailing' vs. 'spreading' in a hanging basket?

Are "spreading" and "trailing" somewhat synonymous?

I have just gotten some Wave spreading petunias for my hanging baskets. I would like them to trail: spill over the pot and cascade down. I am concerned that spreading means they will want to stick out horizontally!? (Like a ballerina's tu tu?)

I haven't had $$ to go nuts on plants this year. The annuals at local store just went down to 50¢! There are still many good healthy plants in there, just picked through and a limited selection. Even though I am not a huge fan of lavender/purple color (I'm a white flower gardener :-) and was unsure about the exact habit, I feel like I scored getting 8 light lavender/pink Wave petunias in very good health for $4.

I have always done a mixed hanging basket with about 3 plants, but this time I'm going to put just these, solo. (well... maybe I'll poke a couple allysum volunteers in here & there...)

Ooooo I'm so excited! Too bad that before I can plant first I still need to clean up the hanging baskets from last year :-P
