what to do after daffodils finish blooming in tub

I planted daffodils in a tub and they finished blooming. I waited till the leaves dried up and then removed them. I was wondering if I need to take the bulbs out of the tub and plant them later so they bloom next year.

That depends on the tub and the daffodils.

If you want to use the tub over summer for a display you can tip out the bulbs and put them aside in a cool and airy-dry place until it's time to replant.

If you don't need the tub for summer you can put the whole thing out of sight and leave the bulbs in the potting mixture.

However. If the tub is not deep (around 24") what often happens is the bulbs sneak to the bottom and, when their new roots begin, they have only a small area of soil to grow in. You end up with a big mass of tangled roots all trying to escape through the drain holes.

When replanting time comes it is probably 'best' to tip out the contents of the tub and sort the bulbs for size. Put the little offsets into a separate container or directly in the ground.

Use fresh mix and replant the larger bulbs. When they start showing through you can sprinkle some slow release fertiliser on the surface and gently 'stir' it through the top inch or so of mix.

Please note: some sorts of Narcissus will be up and in full leaf far earlier in their second year than when you first bought the bulbs. For example - my paperwhites and jonquils are already in flower - and we haven't had the first frost yet. They were coming into action, with roots, back in February/March (your August-September). although the leaves were later to show above the ground.

Your bulbs are fully charged for next year and there is nothing to be gained by leaving them in the tub. We are just starting into our summer growing season and your tub could now be filled with summer flowers. Your bulbs will keep in storage after removal as has been suggested. Al

I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. NaRo - i know it has been a few years but i am redoing my master bath and saw your thread because of the york tub we want to put in. I also want to do a corner shower very similar to what you have. Can you post or send me a picture of it to the ceiling and the measurements, including shower door width? Thank you! The master bath looks great!

I had the same problem when we bought our house. The tub was not in bad shape but the bottom of the tub (non-slip section) was awful. I tried a few suggestions in this forum to no avail. I decided to use Bon ami non abrasive scouring powder with a Mr. Clean eraser. WALA it worked beautifully. Now granted my tub I gather had never been scrubbed so it took some scrubbing and a couple of Mr. Clean erasers! I have used Bon ami on my stainless steel pots for years and I have had them for over 30 years and still look new. I figured if it worked to take burn stains off my pot it should work on the tub. You can also use bon ami on your glass cook top, works wonders!

Hi mh_bath, I wasn't entirely sure you are asking me, but since mine is the only pic that shows the horizontal overflow, I'm going to guess yes, so here's the answer: The overall length is 6'3". I am not sure whether using the horozontal overflow (rather than some other design) increases the depth or not... but it's a really nice deep soak. You can check specs for water depth; I do recall that this tub had a deeper maximum fill than many others I looked at. We set ours in a mud bed for stability and insulated all around it and it's wonderful... very solid feeling and keeps the water warm a looooooong time :)

So you remove the dried flowers, and the excess foliage as well, or leave that. I thought maybe cutting back some of the green leaves so they don't take all the energy or goodness from the actual bulbs?

Marian, you cut back any old flower stalks but leave ALL the foliage in place until it ripens naturally and falls away. Rather than sapping the bulb of energy, the foliage re-energizes the bulb for the following season, allowing it to flower properly. Removing the foliage does the opposite and actual does sap the bulb and can prevent flowering and even impede perennialization or the ability to return in subsequent years.
