What happened to my bulbs?

I live in eastern Newfoundland, Canada, zone 5a.

This is the 2nd year for my bulbs (tulips, grape hyacinths and daffodils). They are planted in a brick planter box on the front of my house, facing south-west. Last spring they all came up fine. This spring only about 1/2 of the daffodils bloomed (the leaves are there but there were no "stems" or buds), the grape hyacinths are fine but out of about 100 tulips only 4 or 5 have buds. All the leaves grew but no stems and now the leaves look like they are dying.

I didn't do anything different this winter than last, I didn't cover the planter box but it was covered with a lot of snow both years. Last spring after they bloomed I left the leaves there to die back on their own, cut them off when they were dead and planted annuals (petunias) over them.

Any tips so I have blooms for next year? This is really disappointing.
