Annual Geraniums - Deer Resistant?
Comments (17)News flash! Sunday morning we discovered that our geraniums -three in a pot- were nearly all denuded. I had just removed a Persian Shield from the geranium pot. Deer don't like Persian Shield I had read, and indeed it thrived unmolested last year. So of course I figured removing it had emboldened the deer to feast on the geraniums. So I put it back in the pot. This morning a doe was grazing amongst the underbrush of the wooded area 25 feet from the kitchen window. I quickly went to see if the geranium's few-remaining leaves and single bud were still there. The leaves and buds were gone and so was the Persian Shield. I think I spend more on what deer eat than we spend at the grocery store....See MoreList of annuals that rabbits wont eat, and what they do eat
Comments (63)Hello snaylor, " The rabbits come up on the railing of my deck to eat from the rail planters and the other plants (on plant stands!) on my deck. Stargazer lilies chewed to the ground before they are an inch high. Nothing "cute" about bunnies, they are destructive, filthy animals. " Since you have a neighbor, I assume you live in town and an air rifle is not a good idea for controlling the rabbits. A slingshot would probably be legal, but would take some practice. Assuming your deck is in your backyard, fencing the rabbits out of your backyard is probably the best idea. A chicken-wire fence about 3 or 4 feet high might work, provided that your codes permit that. If you have an existing fence, the chicken-wire would just serve to make it rabbit proof. Nothing will keep squirrels out, but as you already know, they can be trapped. Fortunately for me, rabbits don't damage my zinnias. We have several native plants in our rural area that they prefer. Comments (16)Cameron, I started the Inula from seeds obtained from Gardens North a few years ago. If you want a few seeds, just send me an e-mail. I did get a new one this year from a private garden centre. The leaves are spectacular on that one as well - more ridging, leaves much wider, but not as long - and I am waiting to see how it performs next year. So far so good. Newbie in NJ, Yep! I just think it's a nice plant in the gardens. It gives architectural structure, foliage is resistant to disease and pests and retains it's beauty for the growing season, great for late season pollinators, etc. :O) It also won't fall in the many winds we have here due to tropical storms coming up the coast. Oh yes, PV is growing it on her balcony. LOL! The shrub in the front is a variegated Forsythia known as Fiesta. The stems are a maroon red and it grows slowly. Mine has never flowered, but I grow it for the foliage....See MoreDeer resistant annuals
Comments (8)I sowed cypress vine many years ago but may have been too late as it didn't bloom well. Haven't tried again though have thought about it. Maybe next year. There are many plants in my gardens for hummingbirds. Moss roses self seed every year in front and under my mailbox which has dry sandy soil. Can't help loving a plant that takes care of itself. macfam69, surprised that your Yvonne's salvia had critter damage. I used to grow YS as well and didn't have any damage. Deer and rabbit damage vary from year to year. After years of little hosta damage most of my hosta have been savaged this year. Some phlox paniculata were pruned while other nearby ones were not. Don't think they ate the annual phlox the years that it was in my gardens. Annual rudbeckia is another one that in some spots it gets eaten and other areas it doesn't. Who knows why? Fickle, I guess. There are other annuals that I have grown over the years that had little or no damage, snapdragons (mine bloom late as are self seeded from years ago), cosmos, annual verbena, Impatients balfourii, ... I no longer plant pansies in the garden beds as they are like candy for critters....See Morenancy_in_co
