It looks beautiful in that pot!

You have it in a great exposure. Just make sure it's watered well, and it'll bloom all summer for you. No need to deadhead.

I normally use time-release fertilizer pellets on my annuals (Osmocote) because I'm lazy about fertilizing and more often that not I forget to do it, so I just sprinkle the beads down when I plant and that's it for the season. I don't see why Miracle Grow wouldn't work, but don't over-do it - follow the package directions for strength, frequency.

No help regarding over-wintering, but I do believe you can root cuttings. Perhaps someone else will be able to post instructions for you.

I love New Guinea impatiens, I get a few every year and grow in pots - lot of flower bang for the buck.

I found some plant propagating tutorials in youtube. I went ahead and did the experiment this afternoon. Hopefully, it will work. :)

Here it is. Just to be clear :) if you go back to my last post, I didn't specifically say propagating impatients. It's general. I hope it will work.

Both are still looking good. I don't see any sign of wilting/drooping.

I love the way NG Imps look - there is a Impatiens forum - if you want to try there too. Occasionally Mr. Impatien gives advice and he's quite knowledgeable. As is MXK3, in the helpful advice department.

I grew NG imps in a bed - I won't bother you with the pictures - they grew beautiful - but I'm sure they are photo sensitive b/c after a full summer they did start looking a bit ratty.

I think generally people take cuttings - good luck with those, they look fantastic.

After the 3rd or 4th day I had it, I hate my NG impatiens. It doesn't look really good. It even only gets like 4-6 hours of morning sun but the leaves are so friggin terrible. Sorry for my words. I am just so^10 upset with this plant.

The cuttings are still looking good. I don't see any change at all. I pulled one out yesterday and still didn't have roots.

I don't think you should blame the plant, unless it came to you diseased, in which case the cuttings would be exhibiting signs of any problems as well, and even then it's not the plant's fault. An east exposure is great for the plant, too. If the plant is faring poorly, it's probably something cultural that you either did or didn't do. Examples would be over-fertilizing, over-watering, exposing the plant to extreme or sudden chill, exposing the plant to too much sun when it's poorly acclimated, heavy wind, .....

You say the leaves are looking terrible. How are they looking terrible? Do they have white specks on them. Are they just droopy.
White specks are a sign of spider mite. The bane of impatients. Insecticidal soap helps but you have to spray it often, and get the undersides of the leaves, because they hatch out every 3 to 5 days.

Wilting leaves could be a sign of too much water or over fertilizing or maybe the soil it was planted in or even too cool temperatures. It's hard to say without actually seeing the plant. How often do you water. In a planter the size in cooler weather you probably only need to water once a week or even longer. Impatients are very prone to root rot if they are watered too often.

As for taking cuttings for any impatients including the new guinea ones, I've done it for years.
Cut about a 4 inch piece from the growing tip of a branch. In a pail or container mix a good well draining soil like pro-mix with water so it is moist throughout but not sopping. fill your pots. Dip the cut end of your slip in rooting hormone--I use stim-root NO. 1. With your finger or stick dibble a hole in the soil and drop in your cutting and cover it in. You will know it's rooted when it shows new growth. This usually takes 2 to 3 weeks. Keep the soil moist but not overly wet and don't fertilize for a couple of months until the plant has lots of roots

Re the ratty foliage: By any chance did you get hit with an unexpected frost? It is entirely possible to get frosted in May, and even a light frost may damage annual leaves. Do agree that it could be many other things, too. Posting pictures of the damage would be helpful.

FWIW, I've never had foliage problems with NG impatiens, they are very carefree aside from watering and look fabulous all season.

For one thing, that planter looks like it is just crammed with plants. Sometimes growers will do that to get a basket market ready quickly. Cuttings are cheap, but time on the bench isn't. So, you fill the basket with a LOT of cuttings and it fills out quick! But, the problems come down the line when the rosettes of foliage grow so tightly that they can't expand normally and the old foliage gets yellowed and smothered under the new and rots. If you ever let them go way too dry, the leaves will do a wilt out and have a vascular collapse they never really recover from, either. Not to mention overcrowded pots are seldom able to be watered properly.

When you take cuttings, don't pull them out of the soil to check for roots. You'll know when roots form because the plant starts 'moving' instead of sitting there in suspended green animation.
