Coir instead of peat moss in SWC container mix?

I live in SE Queensland which has a climate similar to Hawaii. I am getting very interested in the whole SWC idea particularly to grow totamatoes in the larger containers. However peat moss is very expensive in Oz.

A substitute claimed to be just as good is chopped coir which is sold in compressed blocks which expand when dunked in water.

Has anyone tried this and with what results?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, John
