Katsura and American Plum for Bonsai?? Bonsai rookie questions!

hackbagger

I'm interested in getting started in Bonsai and have some basic questions.

1. I obtained a healthy sprout (12" or so) from a Katsura Tree that I wish to use for my first Bonsai project. Is this an appropriate plant? Assuming I don't kill it this summer, what do I do with the tree in winter?

2. Anyone tried an American Plum? I have some real old ones on my property and they are gnarly and pretty cool looking. There are sprouts all over the place that I could use if appropriate.

Lastly: any info on primer type books or videos etc to get me rolling would be appreciated.

pardon the probably dumb questions.

thanks,

hackbag
