Ants killing aphids and whitefly?!

I have 2 outdoor planters spending the winter indoors. They are planted with a large leaved ivy, impatiens and chartreuse sweet potato vine. I noticed a few weeks ago that the growing tips of the ivy were heavily infested with a brownish greyish aphid, while the sweet potato vine had whitefly. I cut off the ivy tips, and made a mental note to go find the insecticidal soap. I couldn't find it, and when I checked again, the aphids had repopulated.

But then a few days ago I saw small brown ants on all the affected areas, and the bodies of the aphids seemed to be dried up! The whitefly also seemed greatly reduced. I rubbed each area with a wet paper towel, and sure enough, just dead bodies, like dried husks.

Could this be? Are the ants killing these pests? I know ants often follow other insects to get the honeydew. But the fact is the ants are where the aphids and whitefly were, and those two seem reduced if not gone.
