Problems growning impatiens from seed...

This is my second year to grow plants from seeds under flourescent lights in my basement. All of my plants are healthy and lush, except for the impatiens. They are tiny, barely growing, and look sickly. I had the same thing happen last year.

I've already started hardening off the plants (been getting lots of sunlight lately), but the impatiens are just not growing like the rest of the plants. I'm wondering, since they are mainly shade plants, if I should not have them in the direct sunlight all day? Could that be the problem? Or could it be the soil? I have them in Miracle Grow potting soil.

This is really frustrating because I grew a lot of them since we have a lot of shady areas in our yard. I would really appreciate any help/advice.

Hmmm, well that's odd because you say the other seedlings are growing well.

The only thing I can think of is how far away are the fluoro. lights. I normally keep mine about 2-3 inches above the top of the plants and adjust the height of the lights as the plants grow taller (have a hook and chain set-up -- not fancy but hey it works).

You could try setting them out in the sun during the cooler weather (but harden off over a period of days - see my reply to Dave from Michigan's post) to see if that helps, but keep in mind impatiens prefer warm conditions so not sure if outside during this time of year is the best idea. Might be worth a try to see what happens, though.

one to 2 inches from the lights.. as noted..

perhaps as the others got tall .. and these planted later ... the lights went up..

either drop the lights... or lift the impatiens ...

not under humidity dome. Biggest cause of dampening off which i constantly fight. Two days ago spent all day at an annual grower that supplies all of west MI Home Depot. green houses as big as foot ball fields. Asked all kinds of questions. There starting mix is 80% peat, 12% vermiculite, 8% pearlite. Fanatical on hygene and eliminating pathogins. Even had to step on Chlorex soaked pads before entering green houses. Both for controlling disease to seedlings and for eleminating any disease as they ship across state lines. They do not cover seeds, was told almost all seeds germinate uncovered as they do in nature, My guide said no problem getting impatients going. Start New Guiney from cuttings, just stick into same potting mix and NO hormone powder---too harsh. The whole secret is humidity, heat and light They heat from bottom to 72. Air circulation important in eliminating dampening off, also keeping surface dry and using a sterile mix, They don't even use trays over again. Send to plastic recycler to grind up and remold. more efficient than a Chlorine wash. they Add 2% chlorine to water as they have well water. City water is 3.5% also use both a basic and acidic liquid fert added to misters and drip system. . I'm starting to add 2% chlorine as i have well water and have sterilized all starting medium in the microwave 3 min until it reaches 200. I am experimenting with some impatient seeds in a wet paper towel/plastic bag in a sunny window. This will determine rate of germination

I've never started imps outside - I've always started them in the house - so I can't help you. But I do know that impatien seed need light to germinate - so you might NOT want to cover them with any mulch - but again there's that 'I haven't started them outside before' thing again. I'm also in zone 5, and I'm still getting a frost... I don't know how imp seed takes frost... May be someone else can address the ADDITIONAL questions I brought up! :)

Thanks indeed, MrImpatiens, I will try and track some of them down by next spring. My two dark-leaved plants are still in bloom in the house, and I have a really beautiful green-leaved one with amazing pink flowers. The odd thing is, I thought they were too flamboyant and never bought any; then I saw three almost dead ones which aroused my pity, and the supermarket let me have them for 30 cents. They are the ones mentioned above, and I am a complete convert. I suppose the beautiful leaves of your plant suppress the flowers somewhat, which happens, I believe, with many variegated plants.

Right - you don't normally fertilize lotus until you get an aerial leaf. They are super easy to burn when they first start growing in the spring from rhizomes. I have learned to plant them into a good fertile soil (soil from my vegetable garden works well) and to give seedlings a small amount of fertilizer - very small - if they are showing any signs of deficiency. That may be what is causing the yellow streaks in your lotus leaves. Sometimes the plant produces leaves that look a little weird opening up, but they usually grow out alright. I normally use a water soluble garden or house plant fertilizer put into a piece of rolled up coffee filter - that gets put into the mud the plant is growing in. Use just a pinch or two - a tiny amount! Don't put the fertilizer too close to the new growth. Osmocote and Nutricote time release fertilizers work too. Enjoy your plants! You will have to post pictures of them here when they bloom for you! They are looking good!

Can you describe how they look a little better? I suspect if they came up unevenly and are not forming their first true leaves, you are a victim of purchasing old seed. I am a commercial grower and can tell you that bad seed never produces good plants. Check your source. A lot of mail order houses purchase "leftovers" from commercial vendors.
If you trust your seed source, then check your media. Miracle grow potting soil is loaded with a urea based fertilizer. Urea + wet+ low light+ T

I've found I've had issues with double imps - germinating and growing... No trouble with others. What are you growing - new guineas, doubles, regular imps?

I also have found that keeping them in a humid environment is helpful - I keep mine covered under a dome much longer than any other plant (besides begonias).
