It has been years since I grew a run from seed instead of rooted cuttings and that was when the first commercially available line came out......Tango. I notice that some new lines are now available and that could change the equation a lot. Growing seed-start NG imps are a little more challanging than yiour buzy lizzies. First off is the longer production time to reach the size you'd expect to buy them if they were sold potted. Under ideal conditons we are talking six to eight weeks to size up. I found them to be more sensitive to growing conditions, especially in regard to growth and proper exposure and watering. They can sit for a long time at a squatty size and will lose their precious leaves if they feel insulted. LOL. I can't complain about how they did eventually when planted outside in my trial beds but it took a lot time for them to kick in compared to those I started from rooted cuttings, and considerably longer to come to bloom. I still think cuttings are the easiest way to go, however, I doubt you'll find any on the market not patented and you can't take cuttings off patented stock. If you have ideal conditions under which to grow them it would be tempting to try it, especially with the new seed introductions. Some seed-grown annuals tradtionally offered only by cuttin are as good or even better than the old varieties. I love the anelonia "Serena" series for example compared to the cutting grown plant. I switched over to it.

Hmmm, well that's odd because you say the other seedlings are growing well. The only thing I can think of is how far away are the fluoro. lights. I normally keep mine about 2-3 inches above the top of the plants and adjust the height of the lights as the plants grow taller (have a hook and chain set-up -- not fancy but hey it works). You could try setting them out in the sun during the cooler weather (but harden off over a period of days - see my reply to Dave from Michigan's post) to see if that helps, but keep in mind impatiens prefer warm conditions so not sure if outside during this time of year is the best idea. Might be worth a try to see what happens, though.

Are they still in starter mix? If so, then add fertilizer! I use fish & seaweed myself. The plants will be able to absorb them almost immediately. Also, make sure you're not overwatering them. Yes, I know they need to stay moist, but I've always let them dry out a little bit before more watering. Also, make sure you are giving them plenty of light. Once the leaves emerge, I put mine on a sunny windowsill for at least half a day. Come transplant time, mine goes outside where they get sun from 1-6pm. Never a leaf burned, as they are use to the sunlight, unlike the ones you buy in a 6 pack, which are much weaker. Good luck, and have faith. I find that seed grown impatiens are pretty tough.

The tempo series are kind of whimpy and snap off very easily. I still use them though as they are very pretty. I have found that each type has their own pluses and minuses.
