Pothos (and lots of other house plants) make roots in the air that can "find" the soil from quite a long distance. 2. how will i know hwo to free a vine? If you leave the tips to hang down past the pot, they won't find the soil and you can end up with some really long vines this way. 3.could i have saved the vine that came out or repotted it? It's hard to say without seeing what it looked like...

Hi, and thank you so much for all the wonderful wisdom. I planted these in April. They are going nuts. Apparently they like neglect, because theyve all but been ignored until now. I will tie them to the cable I ran and hope that it will eventually climb over itself. I really needed something to cover up the stucco wall. The house is 2 story and on a corner, so all you see is STUCCO. I have planted royal trumpets before out front, but lost them to frost. After so much time invested, I couldnt bring myself to do it again. So I figured from what I heard Lady Banks was surefire. Sure wish it was self attaching, or at least would do the coiling itself. My arms look like I was in a catfight! Thanks again, Jen

hi there, i have 3 climbing hydrangeas, 2 are in their 3rd summer, and one is in it's second summer. the two older ones are on the south side of our (stucco)house, with one getting more sun and one getting a little afternoon shade. the one that gets a little more shade is taking off this year, almost 10-12 ft high. the other one is a little slower, i suspect that the additional sun and a little less water due to it's location might be why. still blooming and happy though, and filling in quite a bit from the bottom this year, but only at about 5 feet. the two year old north sider is also growing, at about 5-6 feet now. i think they are worth the wait, i've seen some big established ones around and they are beautiful. i also have a moonlight schizophragma planted next to the taller of the 3 yr old hydrangeas, and that is taking off, much higher than any of them, and is really beautiful. you may want to plant one of those too, for quicker gratification, and also to "extend" the bloom time, since they tend to bloom a couple of weeks after the hydrangea, and climbs in the same way. i think the combination is really nice too. good luck!

I created a "wall" of climbing plants about that size using an HID grow light. But that was in its own room, and those lights are very strong  not suitable for a place where people will gather. A more practical step might be to have some low-light climbing plants, such as pothos or philodendron, and grow them up a picture-window grate in light shade or somewhere else where there's good natural light but not full sun. The House Plant Forum would be a good place to ask about choice of plants.
