If most of the leaves are yellow, you can move them. You might have to delay your annual planting by just a couple of weeks. Or, if you dig up a nice big clump of dirt with them, still waiting as late as possible, they might do all right, even if the leaves are still green. yvonne, I have a mix of glads that are purple with a pink center, salmon, yellow, white and a pink with a darker center. They are starting to seed as the flowers die off. I would love to trade some for your hosta- sagae and echinacea- pixie meadowbrite if your interested. I'll have to let you know when the pods are ready on the glads. It should be in a week or two. Oops, I didn't answer all your questions. I probably wouldn't plant fall-blooming crocus in your lawn because unlike in the spring when cold soil causes slow growth of grass, the grass is growing quickly in September and will need to be mowed when the flowers are setting buds. While they are technically perennial, the critters may eat them just like spring crocus, so in reality they rarely come back for a lot of years in my garden since the voles get them. Because I love that color in the fall, I plant them anyway, usually around plants that the voles don't like Colchicum needs to be planted in a flower garden since the foliage is so large and coarse. They tend to be expensive per bulb, but they are toxic to critters and will multiply over time, so if you like that bright purply-pink color in the fall, I think that they are worth the money to buy a few of the less expensive ones. I bought a few and now have several very large clumps of flowers each fall after less than 10 years.

I think these are flowers that need to be planted in clumps or groups. I had a wonderful grouping of white ones, tucked into a spot in the garden, that unfortunately got beaten down by the monsoon rains we had earlier in Ocotber. The poor things bloomed but they did so laying on the ground, and they weren't much to look at. Next year! I also have some purple ones planted out by the street, and while these are more scattered and not planted as closely together, the individual blooms are spectacular on a sunny day, as they open wide. I do need to add more to this planting, but in the meantime I always get comments from neighbors passing by. Perhaps you could plant in bigger clumps, and it might help it it were possible to clean up the bed they were in before they bloom? You're right that if you have a lot of fallen leaves (like I do) that the effect is diminished. Hmm, I wonder how fall crocus do in pots? I've never tried that and I wonder if it would work? It might be nice to have a full pot of them on the patio or front steps. :) Dee
