a few q's for the bonsai gurus

I'm an ignorant beginner, hoping for a little guidance from the experts. Just a brief synopsis of how to start, or a shove in the direction of assistance would be great.

I have some one year old catalpa seedings, and one year old Malinche seedlings. I am wondering where to begin with these. I live in zone 5, so my catalpas have remaining outside 4 seasons, and the Malinches spent the winter indoors. All of these are healthy.

I know this is going to take a long time. I am very patient.

I am overwhelmed by the amount of info online on this subject. I was told that root pruning shouldn't be done before year 3, and that my seedlings should remain in their big pots till then. Is that correct? What about pruning the foliage? At what age would be a time to start wiring?

Thanks in advance to any who take the time to read this. Regards to all, Yvette
