Just learned technique of bonsai

Ohayo gozaimasu!

I just took a afternoon class here in Cleveland Ohio on bonsai and made my 1st Bonsai out of a Weeping Juniper. I'm very excited and now have the bonsai bug. I want to know if there is anyone here in Cleveland Oh on this forum that knows if there are any Bonsai Clubs in the Cleveland area. Mzkrista

Hi, the Tomlinson (1st here) is excellent - lots and lots of pictures, info., and basic care of many trees. Bonsai School (Coussins) may be a little heavy, but also very good. Mary M's new bk on Tropicals ('indoor' stuff) is very good, as is Totally Bonsai. Herb Gustafson is good, but that book is all about growing conifers in the Pacific NW of the U.S., not at all your thing at the moment, and most things by Colin Lewis would be great, but not that particular one as it's addressing something you may want to get into later on (you did ask about the future), but not yet. Paul Lesniewicz has a good book on Indoor Bonsai, and Deborah Koreshoff (Australia) has a big book on everything. You've got a few good ones to start with, and once you've got a better overall view of things, and have done a little practicing on some young 'starters' from a local nursery (for outdoor trees), or decided to definitely work on trops. indoors, then would be a good time to start trading info. on forums (e.g. the Bonsaisite is very active). Try www. bonsaihunk.com to learn ALL about growing ficus from an expert (Jerry) - a great start for your climate.

Euphorbia Misera, slightly bonsai-ed

What color are the cyathia of E. californica and E. misera? I bought one labeled as misera at the San Gabriel Valley sale a few weeks ago. It just bloomed with yellow cyathia, but from what I've read, misera is supposed to be white. Can these be variable? Also, it appears to be in a pure gravel (not pumice) mixture that has probably compacted. It drains *very* slowly. I am going to take the pure pumice (and synthetic fertilizer) plunge with whatever plants I can, and am wondering if this would be a good candidate, or if it needs something that holds even less water than pumice. I know this plant comes from coastal cliffs, so it doesn't need much in the way of organics... Caudex: I think the composition needs that branch to stay balanced, unless you go for a more drastic windswept or cascade look. Its just too bad that branch isn't coming off the central stem!

The caudex will essentially grow on its own. To really maximize its growth, it wants *warmth* and a fair amount of water while it is actively growing. If it slows down, or goes dormant completely, scale the water way back. If you are growing it inside, it may actively grow year 'round. The other thing to do is make sure the roots have enough space. You really don't want to overpot it, that is an easy way to rot a plant, just make sure it doesn't get totally root-bound. You can prune pretty much to your hearts desire. If you take off too much all at once (like all the vines), you'll definitely slow the growth of the plant down. Be careful of the white latex that will bleed out when you cut the plant. Although Monadenium don't tend to be as caustic as Euphorbia, some people are still very sensitive to it and can develop a nasty rash or sore where the latex contacted your skin. Be especially careful not to get any in your eyes. This species is a good candidate for hanging baskets...

Here is a photo of the box in operation as well as a set of building plans that I drew up. I tried to make the plans as self expanatory as possible, but feel free to ask questions if need be. PHOTO OF LIGHTBOX IN OPERATION Frame Diagram with material list & cut list. The PVC pipe and fittings are available in the plumbing section of any local hardware or home supply center. Total cost will be about $15 to $20 including the steel rod. DO NOT GLUE THE PIPE. Friction fit will do fine and you will then be able to disassemble it for storage. NOTE, When making the frames make the first frame laying flat on the table with the side opening of the TEE's pointing up as shown. When making the opposite side frame make it with the side opening of the TEE's pointing down. COVERING THE FRAME & BACKDROP HANGER LIGHT SETUP Note. For lighting I am using standard household incandescent light bulbs, however incandescent lamps produce a much yellower light than daylight balanced photo floods or normal daylight which is at approx. 5000-6000degK When using standard household light bulbs you must change your cameras "White Balance" to "Tungsten lights or 3200degK". The spoof ad photo that I previously posted began as a light test to see how it would work out using household lights and shifting the white balance. Before posting that pic I added the text in post processing but I did not alter the white balance from the camera. I think you would agree that shifting the white balance on the camera does produce sharp clean whites with incandescent lights.

Yes I did google and did find out about the Cleveland Bonsai Club. I will contact them and find out about the meeetings. Can anyone recommend any good books that you know about in the meantime to study up on?

Hi Lucy - In my estimation, the Sunset Publishing book is an excellent and inexpensive place to begin, for a good overview of bonsai. There are several editions, but the latest (2003) is far superior to earlier editions (translated = get the 2003 edition). ;o) Search for it on the net using: ISBN 0-376-03046-1, or call Sunset @ (800) 525-5111.

The library is also a great source - I've found many of my most favourite bonsai books from my local city library. And they're completely commitment-free! (Apart from committing to return the books).

Amazon.com has a big bonsai selection, and an even bigger 'Used" bonsai book one. They're very inexpensive compared to new ones, they tell you the condition of the books ("torn fly leaf" - so unimportant!) and tell you how to order them. The more recent ones are usually better, and look for ones that give overviews (vs specializing in one type of tree or technique), and ones that specify 'Indoor .. bonsai" (Paul Lesniewicz's is the most popular) though most written for 'outdoor' trees (that must have cold dormancy for months) don't always specify outdoors as it's often taken for granted.
