Milk paint outdoors: experience?

I'm just learning about Milk Paint, and am building a garden potting cottage/storage shed, with thoughts of using MP in various ways--maybe on top of a potting bench surface. Also, I have a very long redwood fence [unfinished & aged to its usual grey] which I was thinking of doing in a milk paint. I'm looking for people who might have experience using this stuff in various applications--some outdoor--other than just for refinishing furniture. My questions range from mixing colors to the layering process to sealers, etc...

On HGTV Country Living, there was a man who made furniture out of recycled wood. Then he did a milk paint of sorts and put them in the yard for a while to age before selling. So maybe not outside unless you varnish.

WHAT IS MILK PAINT? Sounds interesting, have heard of it, but have no idea what it is.

Looks like I'm on my own here. I'm testing Old Fashioned Milk Paint's Safe Paint. It's their new self-priming formula. So far, am having fun mixing color samples. Rather adventurous to be creating your own color. I like the matte finish very much. It's as matte as Farrow & Ball, but ever so slightly gritty to the touch. Maybe that's because I skimped on the mixing for the sample because I was mostly interested in the color. The color has fabulous depth and holds up in all kinds of light even better than the F&B sample I'm also testing.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. As I recall, you do a coat of milk paint and then go over it with the fine grade steel wool once it has dried. It changes from chalky to silky when you do the steel wool. Then paint and steel wool again. I think you only do this twice. Then where you want it to look worn, rub harder with the steel wool to take more of the paint off - right down the wood. Try to do this in places where it would occur naturally like on corners and edges. You may have to use fine grade sand paper if the steel wool is too gentle. Then take the tube of brnt umber and dab a bit on your finger. rub this wherever you've sanded to expose the wood. You can use a soft cloth, but I think I just used my finger (while wearing rubber gloves). Let this dry and then rub on several coats of Old Master's varnish following the directions on the label. Make sure you have plenty of lint free cloths on hand before you start the varnish. I got this technique from a store that sells milk paint and also does the painting and distressing (for a large fee). Let me know if you need more info.

Beth-Sixteen hours between coats on the Advance latex was what is recommended on the instructions. That's long for me between coats. No humidity here. I'm in dry Idaho. Most latex paints will recommend 30 days cure time before scrubbing or setting heavy things on it. My experience with paint that dries fast is that it leaves brush strokes and drag marks. When I've painted my kitchens I only do a few doors at a time completely and rehang them. Then the next section. It's a big job but has never been that disruptive. (not when I'm saving that much money!)

Milk white paint color for kitchen cupboards?

I love this off-white (greige?) paint color for kitchen cabinets (in the background cabinetry in top pic). Can anyone with experience point me in a direction of a good paint color? Should I be looking for an off-white? Gray? Greige? Cream? I don't want it to look like the cream kitchens from 15 years ago... Also, my kitchen is one big rectangular great room and gets east and west facing light. Will greige just look dead in the space? Finally, is anyone doing this milky white color for cabinets these days? I don't really like the look of stark-white cabinets, but I am paradoxically planning on white walls. Thanks sooo much! **Pics are from humphrey munson design. It sounds like they use custom colors, from what I've read...**

I used it in my kitchen. I didn't like the colors of blue, so I mixed one of the blues with the white. I achieved "my" perfect color. Milk paint will spot if it gets wet, so it needs to be sealed. We used a poly-acrylic on ours. Again, this was inside. It's also very hard to mix. It comes in a paper bag of sorts, powder form and you mix with water. If I was to do it again, I'd get an attachment for the drill that would mix it up. Ours was very lumpy, I ended up straining it thru an old pair of pantyhose. If you did a whole fence with it, you'd have to use some sort of outdoor poly on it, otherwise, it would spot. I think I'd email them or call them (the customer service is excellent!) and ask them about using it outdoors.
