Using clear plastic netting as trellis

Has anyone ever used plastic netting as a trellis? Does it last a long time? Where do you get it? And how would I attach it to a brick wall? Would love to hear some advice.

Try seed catalogs, the nicer ones that cover the whole gambit of gardening, seeds, plants, tools, supplies of all kinds.. I ahve seen something similar in some, but do not remember which ones.

We used the light green netting on our privacy fence (around our pool deck) I think this was meant for green beans and such, but it's great and has been for the last couple of years! We have it looped over the top of the fence stretched across as far as we can. Worked great even when we needed to redo (clean and waterproof) the deck and privacy fencing this spring, just undid the loops and let it fall, covered it in plastic and watered. After we were finished, we pulled it up and reattached it! Very pleased! We have loniceria juponica honeysuckle....I think! It's the red and or pink and yellow one. We got lucky and had both of the pretty ones in one pot!

I am going to try and find this again for my clematis that has to be trained and tied to my lattice board! Color doesn't matter, it gets covered fast enough! Good luck!

I personally love the look of different colors together, and I'd go with 5 different clematis. I have mostly type 3's, a lot of viticellas, and some type 2's. Type 2's should still be pruned back for the first two growing seasons to promote root development. I currently have them growing on my fenceline on green wire, it's not too difficult to remove and prune them this time of year, because the foliage is already crisp and brown. Lighter colors will pop better against a dark backdrop, and vice-versa, something to consider. By my cream garage, I have my dark purple clematis. On my fenceline, the lighter colors tend to pop better. Ville De Lyon is a nice pop of pink, stunning, and Viticella Venosa Violacea is one of my favorites. Polish Spirit is a strong grower. Whites are a nice contrast to the colors as well. They don't necessarily all bloom in unison, so it's nice to mix it up a bit for that reason.

Trellis Netting from Burpee (warning)

If you know some friends who all replace netting often, try going in together on a roll of concrete reinforcing mesh, or see if a home supply store will sell it to you by the foot. 1. It will last just about forever. (One piece I have outlasted the first set of wood poles I had it attached to and is still going strong.) 2. Nothing short of a tree landing on it will warp it once secured on the ends. 3. The 6" squares in the mesh make it very convenient to mark off planting areas and allow easy reach-through for weaving and harvesting. 4. It generally does not need a top support when run across a 4' bed. If trellising melons, I do weave through a stick or length of re-bar to stiffen it some 5. Can easily be tied to simple T-posts on either end, or stapled to wood posts. 6. Natural red-brown color (rust) blends readily into a garden setting 7. The 5' width is a good height lengthwise across a bed, or leaves 6" on either edge if building a taller trellis over a 4' wide bed.

For whatever reason I couldn't get those links to work, however I can figure out what you're referring to, based on your descriptions. The thinner netting would work OK for the peas, but definitely would not be strong enough for a butternut squash or melon. Think about what a ripe butternut squash weighs--well over a pound, usually, and often twice that. You will definitely need the stronger netting *at least*, if not something even more heavy duty, for the bigger, heavier crops. I have heard good success with the stuff Burpee sells and according to their site it has a 60-lb breaking strength. If you go to Burpee.com just search for trellis netting and it will come right up.

For 15 years all cucumbers have grown on plastic deer fence in my garden. Had a few girdled as mentioned, but I start my day with a cup of coffee and a garden walk every day, so 99% get maneuvered through the mesh before they set up housekeeping in the openings. My toddlers love to climb on the deer fence, so I can vouch for its strength when it comes to cukes! Your fence seems a little more butch than the stuff I use, so I'd say you're good to go with your setup.

Thanks Vangy and daisyjune for your responses. I would have never thought of looking in seed catalogs for the netting. The light green netting is also a good idea.

Parks Seeds has a nylon netting (white) that says it has a lifetime guarantee - a friend of mine has had hers up (supporting mandevilla vines) for about 4 years. Might try there.
