Where can I find an eight foot plastic or metal trellis?

I would like to put a trellis up on the side of the house that is at least 7' tall preferably 8' tall and 4 or 3 feet across. I prefer a plastic or metal trellis that I can attach to a brick wall. Does anyone know of a good source for tall trellises?

You can get a 4'x8' sheet of plastic lattic at home improvement stores, maybe add some supports for the ground and sides. My 2 cents

You can use an old chainlink panel from an unwanted dog kennel or an old chainlink fence gate. Old wrought iron railings and columns that are no longer in use would work too. I bolted two of my old wrought iron columns together into a big T shape and bolted it to the edge of our concrete driveway to grow a wisteria vine on. Last year I used the frame of an old dog kennel to grow ornamental gourd vines on. This year I will be putting all of the sections to use and make a 20' long arbor to grow morning glories on to create a walk through canopy over a new 5' wide hosta bed down the side of the garage. You can also use something like a tall piece of chainlink top rail, it comes in 10' lengths, strapped to a T post and use a long dog chain hooked to the top and anchored at the bottom. The dog chain will give the vines something to hold on to and it will hold the weight of a lot of vines. The clip on the end of a dog chain can clip onto the top of the pipe. String won't hold much weight.

Thanks for the advice flora. Its not too late for me to reconsider. One of the reasons I'm hesitant to use wires fixed to eye bolts is because I'm nervous abuot drilling and anchoring to the bricks in the chimney. I'm worried about permanently damaging the chimney and was looking for the least risky means of attaching to it without damage. I'm willing to be convinced that my fears are ungrounded. How does one securely anchor eyebolts to brick? I have no experience with such things. I was also concerned that in order to make steel wires taut it would put considerable stress on the anchorage of the bolts. If anybody can link to pictures of the process of securing eye bolts to brick I would greatly appreciate it. As far as rotting of the cedar goes, I guess I'd figured that it wouldn't do much harm if the bottom portion of the trellis began to rot after a couple of years. Shouldn't the tree be pretty well anchored itself by then? Its not like gradual rotting of the bottom portion of the trellis would cause the whole thing to disintegrate, and it would still have some anchorage points to the chimney. Making the trellis doesn't seem difficult. Securing it to the chimney, and the prospect of it making it more difficult to care for the tree are the things I'm more concerned about. Any thoughts?

I think I'm at peak right now. I've never actually had so much overlap of bloom in my daylily field before. Seems like the earlies bloomed later and the lates are blooming earlier. Been kind of a weird year for my daylilies. They love all the rain we had and have grown like crazy but the bloom cycle is a little different and some of my taller ones are blooming on shorter scapes for some reason. This coming week I would be available Thursday morning and early afternoon. Have a 6:00 appointment that evening. Friday anytime. Saturday morning/early afternoon. Sunday I'll be gone. You can take the Cedartown bypass to go around the town , after which you want to turn right onto GA 100 heading South toward Tallapoosa. When you get into Tallapoosa turn right onto U.S. 78 West. That will take you all the way to Heflin, AL which is where I live. E-mail me and I'll give you my street address/more exact directions, etc.... If you prefer interstates you can take I-75 to I-285 West to I-20 West. Our exit is the second exit across the Alabama state line (exit # 205) on I-20. I've been having problems with my Babylock for a few months now - I was at my wits end. I got a tuneup, replaced the needle plate, replaced the bobbin case - the problems continued. Then I happened to notice the tiniest of nicks in the plastic of the foot I use for decorative stitching. I thought maybe the nick was fraying the thread, so I replaced it. And haven't had a problem since then. The bobbin case is mostly plastic and has little nooks and crannies that are just RIPE for breakage - I get so much lint in there that I have to clean it out every day or two - and now that I know how delicate that thing is, I'm worried about breaking something again!!! $30 to replace it - ouch. I wish it was metal instead of plastic. If I have a choice, it'll be metal from now on. No more plastic! Sandra :)

Dixie red head and paws, thanks for your responses. I did check big lots and they were out of trellises. Missed the boat there. Paws, the plastic lattice sounds like a good idea. How would you attach it? Maybe get some solid wood blocks. Attach them to brick wall and then attach lattice to block of wood.

To keep it plastic get a small piece of pvc, cut it how ever far you want it from the wall, put a long screw through the latice, through the pvc into the wall. Now everthing is the same color.

well, there are these little eye bolts that Lee Valley sells, you glue them to the wall, then run string, fishing line, or wire through them... essentially making a trellis ON the wall. this allows you to do things like radiant suns, harlequin patterns, and the like.

or you can build your own trellis out of PVC pipe, or copper, you CAN glue the joints instead of soldering them ;)

I've also cobbled some nice ones together from 're-bar' the stuff you use for reinforcing concrete, and bamboo as well...

but the PVC is fun, because it's got a bit of bend to it, and you can make arched tops easier.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I decided to put a plastic 2X8 lattice with plastic pipe and screws. It took awhile for my husband to put it up because he only has a 9.6v drill but he managed. I have two other areas that have short wood lattices. One has clematis growing on it and the other has honeysuckle. My husband and I are going to try to put up fish line trellises to cover the 4x8 area. Hope this is going to be easier than the plastic trellis was to put up.
