Garden Gnome, Ghastly or Gorgous?!?

Hi everyone, Im a third year student writing my dissertation about peoples opinions on the Garden Gnome. Can you help me please??

Do you like garden gnomes? What do you like/dislike about them?

I don't particularly love or hate them, I'm actually pretty apathetic towards them lol. I do think they are little too common now. I would never go out with the specific desire to buy a gnome but if someone gave me one, or I found one at a yard sale, I wouldn't mind displaying it.

I like the little guys. I think they are jolly looking, sorta like sanata's elfs.I like them in my garden,lurking from behind my hosta's. They add a little color and interest to my garden. I've got 2 little gnomes. Hope to add more some day.

Jon, how proud you must be for your friends. I can imagine it's quite a milestone in the career of a professional gardener to be so recognized at a show like the Chelsea's. I'm afraid that the Chelsea Flower Show doesn't get much coverage here in the U.S., on television or otherwise. I can tell you that the gnomes did make the New York Times though. And so it goes. For those of us who are interested it can be frustrating finding a good source of information. One would naturally think that the RHS Chelsea website would be a good source, but its site really doesn't contain much in-depth information and even the RHS blogs are rather silent on the topic. When I had a subscription to the BBC's Garden Illustrated, there I could find a bit of information. Not a great deal of information though and it always seemed that you really had to be there. Or even better, be connected to those who move in the fabulous British gardening circles. I've come across some of your work here on GardenWeb and on HMF. And the pictures of the gardens you've created are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. So congratulations to you also on your gorgeous achievements.

Silly Advice Needed About My Backyard

Ok, neighbor (I live down by LAX), I'll throw in a couple more cents. First of all, no, you're not silly, you just shocked the heck out of us is all...I think it was the evening view toward the house that did it!!! Secondly, don't give up your questions because you do want to make *some* changes otherwise you wouldn't have asked. It sounds like the 'sterile' observation hit a chord, so work with that. I can't tell from just the two pics, but is this a fairly new property, because the landscaping seems small, either young or groomed that way. As someone with a passion for gardening and I would think the feeling you have being in the garden may be add odds with the straight, although beautiful, lines of the columns and house since you had the idea for the English garden. Sooo, take a deep breath, with any house, let alone a large one, it's a marathon, not a race, and there's always things that need changing. So, since you asked, here's some thoughts that come to my mind, in no order.... -For sure keep the view from the house to the ocean open, it looks nearly like an infinity pool, is stunning, and I would think very relaxing and good for the spirit. As mentioned, taking out the pool entirely is probably not the best thing if you move, and if you're not old enough for a jacuzzi yet but you will be eventually so that's a must keeper if they are the pools on the sides! ;-) Or, for that matter, if you re-arrange the pool a bit later, I'd keep the 'therapy' water in the design. Folks may not swim, but most everyone has a bad back, etc. and what better than enjoy the therapy looking out over the ocean??? -Is that a balcony in the middle of the house? What about some _modest_ sized, so as not to eliminate the lines of the house trailing plants or even roses? Bouganville would be monsters unless you could find a small variety, but would be drought tolerant and match the style of the house. -Urns would match the decor, but not soften the appearance if that's where you're going. Also, don't forget, unless you specifically drain water away from pots, they'll stain the concrete around the pool and it will look ghastly. -I have to agree about finding a professional for more guidance in the pool area. There must be a ton that work up there. There are so many landscape designs up there drive around at least for ideas, and if you're really brave, knock on the door on a weekend to see if they'll share. If nothing else, they should take the question as a compliment. -Knowing not what I know not, I wonder if there are pool people that could change the style of the pool to (it sounds like?) something elegant but more garden appropriate, more pond-like as mentioned above, ie, darker bottom, garden waterfall into it, etc. If it's chlorine you can have a gizmo put in that somehow makes chlorine for you, eliminating some of the maintanance, or go for salt water, some people like it, I don't know the pros and cons. -Weather. It gets chilly up there in the afternoon, let alone other than the summer season. And foggy. If you do make changes, do keep in mind some protected space if you don't have it elsewhere, if you want to sit outdoors and enjoy the view of your new garden design and the ocean. Ok, gotta get back to work, but do take to heart that although I'm sure you love your new house and the view is amazing, you wouldn't have posted if you were 'comfortable' in the pool area. Follow your instincts and see where you go. It's your space, keep asking questions until you're happy with it. Best wishes!

Saw this very old post and had to read it. It's amazing that more than a decade has gone by and many of these items are still a massive pet peeve of mine and still regarded as faux pas. I absolutely hate red mulch, white gravel. The tacky plastic items are gross. Mini fences make no sense to me. Why not just plant a row of 6-12 inch growing flowers or plants. Not a big fan of people using wheelbarrows (other found objects) as a flowerpot. Too each their own, but I am always drawn to the classy/formal looking gardens. Lots of plants, but within a colour scheme or proportionate to each other in that the forms of things complement versus distract or compete against each other. Sometimes less is more. Another pet peeve of mine is over planting and it looking like a hot mess.

Bunny, your mystery plant looks to be Siberian Iris. I have clumps of those all over. I love them. They are usually one of my first blooms of the season. Around first of may here. Mine did not bloom much this year but they had been moved and divided into small clumps the year before soI thinkthatis why. This year I have spent a lot of time weeding them and feeding them and they have quadrupled in size. SO,after they bloom, I will prob. divid them again, but not as small of clumps this time. I think they bloom better in med. size clumps. Otherwise mine die out in the middle when too large. I like to group the clumps, though, that way you still get a massive bloom area, They are one of my favorites. Nichol

I'd like maybe one, half hidden as a sort of surprise in the garden. More then that and it seems a bit kitsch (just my personal opinion).

I think garden gnomes and elves are creepy.

This is probably due to my being Swedish and gnomes/elves are always responsible for snatching children or doing something evil in Swedish bedtime stories.

Nothing like frightening a child with abduction by a gnome before bedtime, huh?

I also get the creeps from clowns.

Yes, I am aware of the lack of reason this phobia is based on.

First off, your thesis sounds a lot more fun than mine.

Second, I love garden gnomes! I personally have pink flamingos, but if I run across the right gnome I'd get him. It can't just be any gnome though. No plastic piece for me. You have to have an appreciation for the absurd and kitschy.

Once ran accross a survey on the "tackiest" garden ornaments. lol Wife wanted to nominate my Gnomes lol
I found a site that sold ornaments But made my ornaments look downright works of art . Best i think was ten foot tall plastic palm trees available in pink, purple,or muti colored.lol For a few bucks more you could get color changing illumination!!!
Or maybe better, an inflatable gorilla. up to 30 foot tall. Was available in purple .pink and for the consevative , black with brown!!
Wish I could find that site again !! People really buy this stuff??? gary

I think a whole herd of them coming down a hill (someone elses hill, not in my neighbourhood) would be neat, but I wouldn't mingle with them after dark.

Since they started using the "traveling gnome" to advertise one of those get-your-hotel-room-cheap places, I vote on the ghastly side.

I think I am up to 15 of them. They add some early spring interest to my garden before my hosta are unfurled. Once the plants are going strong, you have to really look to find them. This is how I like it. This way they do not compete with my perennial shade garden. I want there to be no confusion as to what is the star attraction in my garden. It seems to me gnomes are rather shy creatures and really do not like being fully exposed. Come fall they begin appearing again. Before long they need a brushing off and a bath before they are put to bed for the winter. Today the snow is about half gone, water is running everywhere. I can hear my gnomes beginning to wake up and beg to be let out of the winter cupboard. How I wish I could let them out!!

I was unfortunate enough to have seen the movie "Leprauchan" when I was a child. And since gnomes slightly resemble that awful creature, they make me a bit uncomforatble. But I would think they would add an interesting element if tucked away here and there. Although then they might have the one up since they are hidden. Do you think some are ankle biters??

I used to think they were tacky little guys, but I have grown to like them. I prefer the ones that are a little antiqued, weathered, or plain colored. The traveling gnome probably actually helped change my mind, his days go bad about like mine sometimes:)
