Fragrant Gardens?

I was browsing this board last year and came across someone who recommended a website for fragrant annuals and seeds - something like Fragrance Gardens or Fragrant Gardens? It was wonderful - but now I can't find it again. They had a list of summer's most fragrant, night fragrant flowers, etc. The owner of the site had taken a leave because of a death in the family. Does anyone know this site that I am speaking of? Any assistance would help - thanks.

I never had very much success direct sowing them. I had the best success by planting 3-4 seeds in 16 oz recycled Styrofoam cups (soil nearly to the top) with an inverted plastic cocktail glass taped onto the top. If you plant too early the seeds will rot. When the plants are just a couple of inches tall, I plant the plugs close together to get the mass effect. Sweet peas do not like to have their roots disturbed so jugs do not work very well. They grow long roots before the leaves start to emerge, so deep cups are best. Unfortunately it has become a rare thing that Virginia has the cool, wet springs which allow the sweet peas to thrive. Kathy, who is trying her best not to look at the hyperlink Sue posted

Where can I find seeds for fragrant garden plants?

Buzzy, I'm guessing that you're question hasn't been addressed because any of us would have to do the same legwork that you need to...check out some of the reputable seed houses and see what's on their lists. I'd expect that you could find seeds for those plants 'fairly' readily...maybe not at one mail order location, but probably between a couple. It's very common for me to buy seed from a couple of different locations. Maybe you could narrow your search a bit, and just look through 'fragrant flower seed'. Lily-of-the-valley is of the knock-your-socks-off family, provided you plant in a controlled area so you won't be overrun with it. A few LOTV stems in a bouquet with Lilac will help satisfy your urges towards beauty and scent. I also suggest freesia for a bulb, and agree with more lilies. Is there such a thing as too many lilies? I think not. Sweet alyssum is great for an annual along walkways or bed borders, or even in pots at the base of larger specimens. And you can just till them under next season. Not sure how long your growing season is but I have to suggest one of my favorites, a plumeria tree. You could grow it in a large pot with wheels as I do here, if you have room in your garage or basement to overwinter it. I'd be happy to ship you a cutting of a pretty pink cultivar which I don't know the proper name of, but which knocks my socks off annually from May till October in Zone 10/13. If you're interested, let me know! I'm including a link with some plumeria basics for you which I found helpful. I hope some of these suggestions fire your imagination. Your garden already sounds like an enchanting perfume oasis but like the composer of an unfinished symphony, you can always stuff in a few more notes to round out the whole work! If you are looking for something that smells sometimes almost too sweet - my night blooming jasmine is true! Low maintenance and dependable...Can grow into a large bush or trained - I have one by the street wired over a trelis and the back yard bush is kept groomed...either way...Mine blooms every full moon and the sweet smell always seems to delight the pm walkers...only blooms at night....google this is not familar...Anyway, I have new seeds and I have successfully been placing several stem stocks dipped in growth hormone and mailing out...with the receiving end arriving in good shape...place in water and root away...just a thought if you are interested....email me

Not familiar with the website you're looking for, but a wonderfully fragrant night flower is Datura. Lovely both in foliage and flower and fairly strongly scented.

Also, don't overlook petunias. The scent of petunias is wonderful on a warm, muggy evening (white and purple cultivars are the most fragrant).

Heliotrope is one of my favorite annuals, I can't resist sticking my nose in it every time I step out onto the patio.

If you want to really knock your olfactory socks off, nothing beats Oriental Lillies - GLORIOUS! If you don't want to plant any in the garden, you can buy pots of them (or pot up your own bulbs) to scatter around. I grow mine in my beds, and I also have pots of them on the patio, which I overwinter in the garage with no problem.

Don't forget about nicotiana. Some varieties are very fragrant, others are not. I've grown eau de cologne, and they really have a nice fragrance. While my nicotiana and lilies have the strongest perfume, stocks have to come in a close second. Such a beautiful, sweet clove scent, much like carnations, but stronger. Sweet allysum is a sweet scented annual that I use a lot, although I find the white kinds do better than the colors. Some petunias, heliotrope (I never had luck with it, but it supposedly nice) and snapdragons have a light, sweet fragrance. I had datura last year, it was great too. Peonies are good for the fragrant garden, although some peonies are more fragrant than others. I have "festiva maxima" a beautiful double white with flecks of pink. It's been around a long time and the fragrance is strong and beautiful. This year I am going to grow some mignonette. The flowers aren't supposed to be much to look at, but the fragrance is supposedly great. I plant to scatter them about the flower beds, where the flashier flowers will give color, and the mignonette scent. For spring bulbs, hyacinths are a must have for the fragrant garden. I plant them near my windows, so when I open them, the scent comes inside. Actually, I always start a few indoors in hyacinth glasses to have all winter. I've got one in bloom right now. .
