how to attach iron figurines to brick wall?

I have some cute little iron squirrels and birds that I have tried to attach to a brick wall using the same mortar that I used to hold the bricks together. It seemed to work for awhile, but after a few months the iron figurines can simply be lifted off the mortar. I'm not even trying to put these on the face of the brick wall, just on the top. Can anyone tell me what to use?

Some kind of glue maybe? There should be a glue made for that purpose.Something to attach metal to other surfaces.Silicone might work.The kind for outdoor use.Sorry I'm not much help......Lillie

You might try construction adhesive, or weatherproof silicone caulk. I used clear silicone caulk on a small structure I made with retaining wall blocks, and after it cured completely it held very well.

Bricks can not carry a load like that. You need to take a couple of courses out & attach to the house framing then mortar the bricks back in. I don't like doing this tho as most pergolas are RSC which will rot out eventually no matter how well you try to protect what goes into the masonry. I prefer to use beams instead to keep from having to penetrate the masonry. This will put post near the house tho. Al

Again, thanks for the tips. So now I have two avenues to try... 1) I use a regular drill and a masonry bit but can't penetrate the brick to any depth. I then switch and use a hammer drill with masonry bit, drill the hole, insert the red heads and tighten the ledger board. Done! 2) If I use a masonry bit with a regular drill and I can penetrate the bricks then the bricks are too soft for the red heads. Is that correct? Can I do anything in this situation? Thanks again for all your help.

I realize this is a very old thread and perhaps I should start a new one, but I've had this same challenge. I mounted my kitchen cabinets into 100+ yr old brick using a masonry bit, and wall anchors. I also used canned air to blow out all the dust from the hole and then dampened the inside of the hole, then inserted Gorilla glue and then tapped in the anchor and attached the cabinets. I've had 2 cabinets fail and begin pulling out of the wall (one quite suddenly and dangerously and am now truly perplexed as to how to mount them to safely stay put. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

Plaster walls- old house, how do I attach curtain rods?????

We lived in a 100+ yr old house with plaster walls. We always hung the rods from the wood trim on the Windows. We didn't have a problem hanging pictures or heavy mirrors. We usually just used large picture hangers, the kind with the nail already in them that go in at a slant. If you try to drill a screw straight into the wall I don't think you will get a good solid hold because the screw will go completely through the plaster and wood lath used to hold the plaster on it. You may be hitting a nail in the lath which is why the bit broke.. I would, go to the local hardware store and ask them what to use to hang curtain brackets on a plaster wall. They should be able to help, surely there is a fix for it.
