Comments (39)Plastic bottle, unfortunately. Although glass would be harder to mail. I kind of have to divorice myself from my attempts to avoid plastic during Halloween, or I'd just go nuts with all the stuff we couldn't do. It is recyclable though... There's about 1 tablespoon of sand inside (with a few drops of water, shaken up to keep it from sticking to the bottle), with 5 tiny seashells, and a little plastic sword. Then you roll and tie the invitation with ribbon that's long enough to stick between the cork and the bottle. The cork is pushed in really, really tightly, and they just go right through the mail like that! I put stamps on them...they are under 2 oz each, so they cost $1.34 each to mail. Here's what the invitations read this year - printed on parchment paper, of course: *********************** Get Shipwrecked on Treasure Island at our 5th Annual Halloween Bash! Ahoy, Mateys! Put on your best (or worst) pirate garb, and sail over to our haunted island on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 7:00pm for food, fun, and buried treasure. Follow the enclosed map to find our island  "X" marks the spot! Pirates only  all others will be captured and forced to walk the plank! Ship assignments will begin at 8:00pm, the treasure hunt starts immediately after. Beware the spirits and monsters Follow the PirateÂs Code of Honor  call xxx-xxxx or email xxxx@xxxx.xxx to either reserve your spot on a ship, or to admit that youÂre too scared of Jolly Ol Roger to go after the booty for yourself. If we donÂt hear from you, youÂll be hearing from BlackbeardÂs Ghost Costumes will be provided for those who "forget" them, as well as a hearty dinner and drinks to ward off that nasty scurvy! Scare you thereÂif you dare! Guests under 21 will be consigned to Davy Jones Locker. ********************************** There's a map of the Carribean on the back, with the closest cross streets as "islands", and a big red "X" by our address. I try to mail invitations when I can...not only is it fun for people to find different things in thier mail box, it also avoids potential hard feelings between those we invite from our offices and those we don't. We did coffin invitations 2 years ago though that couldn't be mailed - I looked everywhere to find small coffins that were cardboard, but had no luck. So we folded our own from paper patterns, and hand delivered those. Now of course there are little coffins everywhere... *sigh* People often ask where we get our ideas - and really, hubby and I are normally wondering how people can *avoid* getting so many ideas! Everytime I look through a catalog or walk down a store isle of decorations, more ideas pop into my head, inspired by whatever I see or touch. It just sort of happens!...See Morethe SCARY part of my Halloween decor
Comments (22)Yes, Luvs, I've been adding a few witch things to my Halloween stuff. I'm really not into all the usual stuff like ghosts n goblins, jack o' lanterns, etc. but I do love witches and ravens. And of course witches have kitties. LOL. How neat, Kathleen, that you (and Candy) also got married in 1970. And Jane, you ate at the Outback too. ;o) Plus, Nana, some of us really like Dancing with the Stars. I think Candy previously nailed it about our Holiday gang having so many little things in common outside of just holiday decorating. Even the same furniture, or same figurines. Maybe this is why we seem more of a family, or a group of really long-time friends. Time, and distance, matters little it seems, some people are just meant to come into your life and make you feel like kindred spirits. I am always in awe of our group here, and the closeness/caring we share so easily with one another. I doubt any of us expected this when we found this Forum, we just wanted to share some Holiday decorating! ;o) By the way, here's the flowers Jas and Suz sent...and the two dolls I kept from my Mom's collection. These dolls come named, so that is Victoria on the left and Rebecca on the right. The photo is my Mom when she was in her early 20's, and the cat pair are very old figurines I found at an antique show about 25 yrs ago. (My mom loved cats) hugs, Karen...See MoreMy Halloween decorating attempt
Comments (16)tam - I love all of your decorations. You did a beautiful job. It sounds like your sons had a great Halloween! The costume is wonderful and it is fun for the little ones if the giver of the candy is dressed for the occasion. We have only had one trick-o-treater in 18 years. Living in the country, it is dark and I can't blame any child for not wandering down my long dark driveway. I live here and think it is scary:,) Would you share where you purchased the lab lighted faux pumpkin? Thanks!...See MoreDon't you hate when Halloween shows up early?
Comments (33)Ditto Sable and Pesky. I don't like to use pesticides. We do have termite treatment every 10 years and whatever they use at the perimeter of the house must deter insects because we rarely get them in the house. We are seeing some red ants right now I think because of the heat and dry conditions, then just this past week we have had a good bit of rain. I don't like pesticides in the house because of the pup - and us too. Bumble - that is how I grew up. My parents and grandparents shared acerage and there are only about 5 other homes in their area. We are still rural here but less acreage (about 1.5). Where we are located we do still have the occasional deer, fox, etc. and plenty of rabbits, squirrels and birds. Re the hummingbirds, we are not seeing them as much this year. I wonder if it is due to our weird weather. They started coming around early but now I am hardly seeing them. Okay - in for a break, back outside! tina...See MoreRelated Professionals
