Help design my country/vintage/modern idk what it is kitchen!

okay, here is my kitchen. Just had the granite installed yesterday and will be installing white subway tile back splash. i am looking for a soft, predominately white kitchen with a country/vintage feel and a few hints of modern whimsy. I dont think i like the red stuff going on, it seems jarring to me so i think i want to paint the red stuff a gray/blue.

Comments (150)side note to Lynn - I was on the dating scene not too long ago so I know what that's like (after my ex suddenly left me). People show what they're made of over time, so be very patient as you get to know them. Be yourself and don't be afraid to turn off people who aren't a good fit. Few people these days are capable of commitment because our society promotes a "shopping"/disposable mentality when it comes to relationships. Commitment comes from deep within and you have to know a person's character and past to know whether they are capable of that. You can see that in how they've handled past relationships, friendships, jobs, and business arrangements. My current husband and I found one another through non-dating channels. Because it was long distance we had a chance to get to know one another deeply with no pressure or expectations. I'm a lucky woman. I can tell you that having a partner to "help with decisions" isn't always convenient though ;) . Handy-ness can go either way too. I haven't had a sink or range or dishwasher for three days now because dh is too busy with work to hook everything up. Comments (21)Thanks again everyone! Sorry, I'm a bit short on time so I won't answer every post specifically, but wanted to say generally what conclusions we've come to. 1. We've decided to use an antique wood and brass torchier lamp we already have and add a fabric shade to it. 2. I'm going to buy some larger frames to add to the collage on the centre wall to beef it up a bit and lose the tiniest frames. I really like the way the collage looks but agree it could use some larger frames. 3. We gave our 4 year old some artists charcoal and nice drawing paper and she made us some gorgeous artwork for the wall next to the fireplace. We tried some colourful artwork there and it was just too much next to the chairs (they really dictate so much of how the room is decorated). 4. Going to look for a larger version of the tiny antique oak table at local dealers and CL. Decided not to go modern and try and find something that will go with the other wood in the room. As trailrunner pointed out, too many finishes in the room -not a good thing. 5. I'm going to try to hang the mirror, but we've had trouble drilling into the masonry of the fireplace in the past. But I'll go to HD and see if a better drill bit helps. 6. I made the cover for the sofa myself, so I'm going to experiment dying a scrap of fabric a bit darker. I don't think I have the energy to make a whole new cover (ever since I made it, family and friends have been swamping me with requests and I've made 4 others in the last 6 months). And while the old dark green chenille matches the rooms colours, I'm just really sick of it and love the look of the cotton slipcover. 7. The fireplace is a fire hazard and we getting a new insert which will require the old tiles come down. They were put on in the seventies and are all uneven and really gross too. My DH really likes the idea of an open firebox with a wood stove type insert sitting inside, but we've got to do some research and see what is possible in our space. 8. I know the wall colour looks awful in pics but it really is the same cream as in the chairs in person. I might be talked into going a bit darker, but too much colour and it's going to lose the modern look and start heading back into traditional territory. Hopefully, the artwork and darker sofa colour will balance things out and repainting won't be necessary (esp. since i do all the painting myself). 9. We've found a local artist that DH and I both love and have decided to purchase at least one of his abstract paintings to hang over the desk area that unfortunately didn't make it into any of the pics but is across from the black wardrobe. His pictures run about $500 for a med. size painting and we decided it would be a better investment than new light, etc. Whew! I think that's it. I will post pics as things progress. Comments (11)Wow...thank you everyone!!! Just about brought tears to my eyes to get all this input. 100% agree with everyone on the clutter (but I wanted to show it how we truly live). I have had in mind to repaint something in the soft pale/blue gray like Amy from Texas mentioned. My sunroom is in a soft yellow, so something that would complement that without having to repaint the sun room also. Great idea to take everything down and look at the vintage things I have. I will take a pic of some of those items and grab some images from Pinterest. I've told my husband I'm okay with selling (we have a view of the bay, so it's hard to want to give that up), but I have to know where I'm going. I'm a homebody and don't like change! Also, my husband's tax business is in a building on this property, so it's not as easy to list without dealing with that either. Yes, we could take down those cabinets above the peninsula. The thing with the kitchen is that I could just do an update (solid granite on the counters) but the cabinets themselves are not that great of quality. Don't want to spend $4500 on countertops going over sub-par cabinets. So I remain stuck on that. And then husband doesn't want to put a big chunk of change in if we might be selling in the near-distant future. And finally, on window treatments, those dang windows are so wide, that nothing standard fits them (including standard sized rods). I was thinking of going with just some simple drapes hung really high, but always have the issue with them being too wide. Blinds would have to be done in two narrow panels on each end and one large in middle. Again, I'm just really touched you guys took the time to help me! Comments (3)How long is this island you have in your drawings? It doesn't look like you have room for a 10 foot long island. Is that where it is right now? Cheaper not to move it so and better there in my opinion anyway. Maybe you are a neat and tidy cook, but I'm not, so I wouldn't want dishes stacked on my island, seems not so in your face over there against the wall. Can you have your cabinets run all the way to the wall on the left side of your drawing? I actually think it's more sleek that way in your particular situation. 9 years agoOkay Toats, I have a question?....I was going to wrap it in plastic and ship it in the cut down IKEA box, but I'm debating the plastic because of condensation. And it being freshly oiled. It's cold here of course, but it may be going from warm to cold and back. Do you think just in the box will be okay....better without the plastic? I'm thinking...yes. I'm wrapping it now. :) One more tease.....ha!

But ....THANK YOU....duck and the dishcloths came and I absolutely LOVE them. I gave you a review on my kitchen post. I hope you don't mind, I gave out your shop info. The cloths are great, I'm not sure I want to use them...they feel so nice. :) And duck....forgedaboudit!....he is TERRIFIC! I'm definitely a future customer and I will pass the word on about your shop to whoever will listen. I'm not just giving you lip service, I am impressed. You do very nice work. Very cool! :)

8 years agoYou can keep the bold accent colors, but in this home we went with soft white cabinets, with a soapstone colored counter-top and went with the blue island with gray walls and white trim..This works well when you have one mass of a popped color like the island..
