Other fragrant roses that I like which Roses Unlimited carry: Deep reds are Barcelona or Francis Dubreuil ( scent is strong and lasting like Firefighter), light yellow is Tchaikosky (smells like candy), light Lavender below is Lagerfeld (like a bottle of perfume), big left pink is Dee-lish, and Comte de Chambord is lowest left (it's the top 10 scents among my 130 fragrant varieties). I like Comte so much that I have 3 plants. The deep small purple bloom on right is Lavender Crush bought from Walmart, but I don't like its scent so I rarely use in bouquet. Lavender Crush smells like Lysol disinfectant.

Kristine, I love the looks of Memorial Day! I hope I can experience it in person one day. And your Crimson Glory looks very happy in that photo. I hope it recovers from its rough start this season and gives you some great blooms!

Karen, your Coral Dawn keeps getting prettier and prettier!

A few new photos today. My Barcelona/Francis Dubreuil is starting its next flush. If the fragrance of any red rose can rival Crimson Glory‘s memorable perfume it is that of Barcelona/Francis Dubreuil! I think Pippacovalent described it best as heady damask with notes of wine and fruit. It is a powerful, penetrating and addictive scent.

My Sweet Chariot is also starting its next flush, looking a bit brighter pink than normal. This one is fragrant now but I can look forward to the scent intensifying over the next few days as the blooms age. The color will also change to a frosted violet-purple. It is often described as “damask scented” but I disagree. It smells exactly like Rosa multiflora but with more complexity, with hints of light, sweet rose lotion and pleasantly bitter spice. The buds and pedicels also give off a delightful black pepper scent that lingers on your fingers. It is one of my most reliable wafters and won the ARS Gamble Fragrance Award back in 2007.

And next is a new bloom on Munstead Wood. Because of a recent hot spell the color has changed to a glowing dark pink-magenta. Is it blasphemy to say that I like this color more, or at least as much as, the darker red shades it is capable of producing? Or maybe I am just spoiled for good reds at the moment with Crimson Glory and Barcelona blooming at the same time. In any case, the fragrance of MW remains strong and complex with notes of citrus, berries and wood.

They have been here about a week, but there are way fewer of them this year.

I am guessing I am killing 500 JBs per day on my 34 roses through drowning and through spraying. morpheuspa2 What state are you in? What spray do you use?

My roses are devoured. The past week has been the worst I have ever seen.

^^ Cr@p that's a lot of JBs! Wonder why they are so bad this year, is it something weather related or just the up-down cycle of things? Who knows. But yea - that's a LOT of beetles to deal with on a daily basis.

I was drowning them daily and then all of a sudden poof! they're gone. I think what happened is the birds finally noticed them -- reason I say that is I saw birds swooping out of the large hibiscus plants I have a few times, there isn't any other reason they'd be playing around in those plants.

Paul Zimmerman has some excellent YouTube videos on training/pruning climbing roses. Explains lateral canes very well. I found them very helpful for my ‘future’ climbers...
