All the walls I can see are tile. I think you need to look at your lighting and some vibrant yellow towels.
Hi,
The light fixtures are lovely and agree, would be better to have one on either side of the door. Don’t know how to remove the house number without damaging the siding, but can share a possible solution that worked for me with a bad installation of light fixtures directly on wood shingles. The caulking was globbed on, and detracted from the whole look. A subsequent contractor, removed the fixtures, and remounted them each on a painted backplate, and they look great now. I wonder if a pair of backplates would hide any potential damage removing the house number might incur on that side, and also be an additional design feature? May have to be custom made, not necessarily painted or wood, but something that would sit behind the fixtures, and add to the look.
I have soft decorative baskets on the floor with books for when the grandchildren come over. They can access them safely
This space is the same 'dining space' in many homes built in the 80s. That counter is huge, move the stools to the other side of the jog, and find a rectangular table with banquette and you will have room for chairs. Or leave the extra chairs elsewhere until needed, find an expandable table that enlarges from small round to longer oval when needed and you will have a loungy effect. I am not a fan of round tables with a banquet as it's a huge waste of seating/eating ratio but if the seating isn't needed... Either way slide the table waaay in against the banquette when not in use.
OP stated the mirror was there when they bought the house. Art would be so much better on that wall.
I would move the big chairs to face each other on the tall wall (since the others are dwarfed) and maybe get a vintage game table between them.
Pull the two small chairs to join the rest of the living room or at least in that direction. You have tall ceilings and you need to keep scale and height in mind.
How far are you into the re-model? Are cabs and counters complete? If not wait until you select cabs and counters, then pick your backsplash.
@HU-187528210 🤣🤣🤣 i bought them on marketplace for the purpose of giving my kids something to sit on until we figure out better chairs that work with our look.
The colors look nice as is, and the idea of black seems too harsh. I would wait until roof is done to better coordinate an updated color scheme.
I would remove the shutters entirely, the bay window and twin on the opposite end are too large for shutters and they shutters do not look correct on those windows.
No shutters they do not belong on any of those windows except the single one and IMO this style of house does not suit shutters . Have aplan for the future that is a work in progress no stuff stuck on with no plan. It would be nice to see the front door you are planning that will give us a hint to the style you want to work toward.. Get the roof first that will drive the rest. Please no Joanna Gaines farmhouse for this house.. Is the bay window going to be replaced with a picture window? The house can easily go MCM vibe it is my fave style BTW Is the window going to be white or is the plan to change all the windows ? I repeat have a plan and work at it as you can afford the changes do not waste money on anything until you have a plan. BTW please do not paint the brick it is right now the best part of the house.
I'd love a space like that for teenagers to hang out. Low chairs, pillows, beanbags. Or for the oldest kid to get a bedroom to herself.
BUT - it is going to be difficult to keep the temperature steady. Attics are hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
I don't think it would be a great guest room.
Are you furnishing the house from scratch to live there yourself? Do you have a budget range in mind?
Settling on a paint color in advance can save time but it means that the upholstered furniture has to coordinate with the walls rather than vice versa. Paint color trends have changed to much lighter shades in the last few years. Have you considered priming the walls in white, selecting new upholstered pieces, and then finalizing your paint choice?
If you have nice oak floors consider an area rug instead. Easier to change, or remove when it’s decided all hardwood would be preferred. Carpet stores can bind the edges of a carpet if you prefer that to a ready-made area rug. And, yes, if you are replacing wall-to-wall carpet you will need to finish the tack strip edge area.
In general, I suggest straying from dark carpet. It immediately can suck the life and light out of the room. Based on your selections, my favorite options are the following. However, I HIGHLY recommend you bring these swatches home to see how they read in the natural light of your bedroom. What reads as super warm or cool in these pictures could be totally different in real life.
- Champagne Fizz
- Soft Pine (this one might be too yellow?)
- Warm Sand
- Topaz
- Timber Ridge
Soft Pine.
For starters remove the low hedge in the front and the circular (former garden?) Do you need that walkway approach to your door or do people approach your house from the driveway sidewalk? if not needed, remove.
I think Lyn’s color suggestions are good and would give the house more ”life,” especially with the long, low roofline. The brick is nice; make sure the City Loft (or whatever color you choose) works well with the brick. Yes to landscape work.
Can you post another picture? everything just looks all grey. Or, take close-ups of each item: bricks, roof, windows (if you don't plan on painting them). Also, the ground looks covered in stones (also grey), are you planning of putting-in grass?
I really dislike th blue with the brick so IMO no more blue and those windows and those bottom windows are never meant to have shutters
I would go with white chairs.
For those rare occasions I would just buy some nice quality white folding chairs. Why take up room in the house with rarely used chairs?
Why the tablecloth? You have a nice kitchen and living space ... and all I see is an old wrinkled tablecloth which brings the whole space down a few notches!
IMO get 4 stacking chairs for those times in white , done. I too really think the tablecoth makes the space look tacky A nice centerpiece on the table much nicer and all the woods do not have to match.
Bondia I like your naked table top! Rather than a cloth, use some brightly colored circular mats and let the wood show! You know, we all really DO live in our homes. They are not stage sets for photo shoots. I am NOT a pro but I love design. At the same time, I live a real life. In a house with lots of flaws. Which I love, by the way. With a puppy who chews rugs and woodwork, and a constant whirl of activity that means I am rarely photo worthy. Don’t sweat it. We get it. 4 chairs. White, if possible. And let that natural table top shine! ❤️
Firstly I’d say go to a real plumbing showroom (not big box) and they can build you any system you want at almost every price point. I prefer the California Faucet diverter valve that has a preset temperature knob (once you set it to 103° for instance you never touch it again) and then two smaller knobs to control the handheld and shower head. This set up also allows you to control pressure.
I would choose a plain white matte tile. The herringbone pattern is nice, but you could use any pattern. But no other colors, gradations or shine
I wouldn't choose any of those tiles. I'd forget tile and continue the hardwood into the kitchen and family room. It's a classic look and really very easy to care for--just damp mop with Bona hardwood floor cleaner. It will warm up the spaces unlike the white/gray tiles which are very cold looking.
If you want something near white, be careful not to clash with the kitchen cabinets and floor. The colors suggested above are cool. Warmer is more likely to work. Since colors don't always appear true on pictures, it is difficult sometimes to make good recommendations. You'll have to sample on site to be able to decide.
I would learn to love it until I had the funds to replace. Personally I think they look nice. Too bad they were painted in the first place.
Agreed, ship lap might be worse. There's no ship lap or barn door anywhere, so I may have dodged a bullet there.
Part of the time, it is realtors that advise the seller to do this stuff.
Mulch 3” over the roots and plant outside the immediate root zone. No mulch volcanoes or worse raised beds that kill the roots. In my area you can plant a ground cover like asiatic jasmine that will cover the roots and stay green
Since they are only connected by the entry corridor, you can have different looks if that is what you are aiming for? What purpose do you want the front living room to serve? If friends come over which room do you use? I would start there so you are designing with a purpose. The back family room is very nice, much warmer in feeling than the front living room as the white leather and blue ? area rug are “cold.” Pull the couch away from the window (hard to tell from photo angle, but at least 4ft) and have the two couches facing each other with the front legs on the rug. For comfortable conversation, seating should be about 8ft apart. If you are trying to connect the two spaces more, then I would look at getting an area rug with warmer cream/beige/white and a large piece of art work that you love for the long wall. First start with purpose though, no point on spending money on a space you won’t naturally use 90% of the time.
It is so narrow whatever you put on walls should be very flat (think big shouldered people or moving items. I would vouch for wallpaper.
Post is 10 years old
Put up a new soffit. It is impossible to make waste pipes look attractive in a home situation, especially in a food preparation area. Add sound insulation in the soffit.
"or the other led mirror I found is 96x48 which adds 6 inches on either side. Please suggest.
Do as above.
The bad planning, not taking time to elevate your plan in a drawing scaled UP to 1" to 1 ' got you here, and painted right into a corner.
Get yourself a really good lighted makeup mirror, as your hang height is already too high to see well.
A note to others:
Water does not splash from a sink to the ceiling!. Tile ......think twice about it, please. Think twice to " do I need it at all? " Answer? Probably not: )
Before spending on anything else or adding any items to the room try various lighting intensities - warm to cool. After that, One of the chairs needs to be repurposed to another room. Select upholstery fabric in a print or weave with complimentary colors to you mismatched marble pieces to make the mismatch seem more intentional. Covering up with runners, knick knacks, etc. looks like, well, covering up. Lrger intentional pieces of pottery, baskets (softer) and floral arrangements will help.
You are creating a beautiful space and you stopped into Houzz because you know the marble mix is off. How important is it to you? Can you live with it? For me, I might live with it for a while, cover the marble with lights and Nick knacks and maybe the mismatch would fade in my mind. But, and i think you know, it is probably bothering you. Could you eventually recover those tables with walnut? Something warm and wonderful in your glorious space?
Look how the walnut just merges with the marble. It is a true match
You’re judging your choices too soon. I love the soft colors. Here’s a little mash up with the addition of a rug.
As they say -the cookies never go back in the box , the same way they came out! - too much brown tall stuff for the space!
Apologies to Bev, I'd want a much prettier view on entry from the foyer.... you could have color, ART! and a lovely focal point that helps balance the room.
when you can SEE a diagonally place opening as you have? Your brain and eye say "I can go that way....!" That's the traffic
With what you have, and don/t have: ) below, and bring the slipper chair OUT of the dining room....or tuck in a bedroom.
You have a couch, two lounge chairs, a dining table............and too much dark brown tall storage to fit against walls.
Draw and measure both spaces, note every wall and window dimension, every door or passage in feet and inches.
List the brown case pieces, WIDTH , each.
Upload the drawing as a jpeg, neat, bold....
and you will get more help,
Show THE BEDROOMS TOO. because something is going to have to move.: )
My suggestion is that you don't need a rug there. You have nice things but that corner looks a little cramped. Does the chair fit in your living room?
keep a floor squeegee handy
It's not just the door swing, it's any and all water remaining on the shower floor : ( when the out swing door is opened..
When folks shower, the want out when finished, and they want a darn towel!
Fix it with a slide, or just be glad it is only guest space.
Thank you for the suggestion of the door slide. I didn't even know that was a thing, but seems to make a lot of sense and would fix the issue. Yes, (lol) I am thankful it is a guest space. I use it to wash my dogs! They don't care if water is on the floor anywhere - ha!
get deeper night stands the ones you have are all wrong for the bed.
