Frankly, I'd worry a lot more about the chemicals being sprayed than a few mosquitoes. Ticks are pretty rare. I've lived and hiked in areas known to have ticks where precautions are recommended, but never seen a tick ---except dog ticks on dogs.
@ruth_mi That's a great idea. It would be wonderful to see the pollinator thread rebooted every year going forward (similar to the annual fall colors thread). I’ll leave it up to someone new to get things started for the rest of the 2024 season. It's been a great run for this thread (approaching 2 years), and very satisfying to see the high level of interest in the topic. Many thanks to all who participated! My hope is that our discussion has inspired a greater interest, appreciation, and love for the little (and often forgotten) creatures that help keep our ecosystems functioning.
I’ll sign off (for this thread) with a couple photos from today (4/10/24). Bumblebee on Snow Fountain cherry:

The new plants Orlaya blooms attracted new visitors that never came here before
It looks like a little bear with wings.
Not sure if they are bees or flies
The Crimson clover patch we planted last fall is blooming now. It is a great view even though it is not in full bloom yet
So many honeybees are buzzing around
A small butterfly also visits

^Welcome back, rox -- where've you been....fun vacation?
I’ve been fighting forest fires! Just kidding!🙂
I had a confusing time a few weeks back on here, and decided to step away to think about things. I’ve done some thinking and I’m back. People are funny beings.🙂
Enjoy your day, letters! And Happy Haiku Day to all.

"I'd have to hitchhike a few miles before any bus nearby to hit me ......" was my first thought.
Then I remembered - yellow school buses travel this road ... (but only five days a week, through most of the year).

There are a number of YouTube videos produced by the nursery to describe their operation and/or discuss specific plant offerings. Since it is coming directly from the nursery itself, I would presume their pronunciation is the way they prefer and therefore the correct one. They pronounce it "eyes lee".
Then the 'eyes' have it. ;-)
Hey Kelly, I would try one if I were you, especially if you can be strategic with your sighting. Photo below is east facing and in the evening is shaded by my house. Works out fine.
I would start with no larger than a 3 gal. and plant in the fall with supplemental water until thanksgiving when needed. Plant a little high for drainage and include a good mulch other than black.
If finding one is hard locally you could find one on-line easy enough and request fall shipping.
btw.....I'm zone 7b southern Md.
best of luck
Mine have stayed very clean because I placed them on stone bases. If they were sitting directly on the orange clay we have around here, it would be a different story. I would've painted them orange instead of white haha. The only marks on the white are a few small scratches here and there from over the years.
It may thin out slightly on the backside below the fence, but this will not be visible except when doing fence maintenance. ;) I'd leave it be. BTW, you have an opportunity to pictorially document how this tree evolves over the next few years. The next time this issue is raised, which is likely to happen, you'll be able to show how it establishes a leader. Good luck with it!
🏆
Got it, thanks again.
BTW- Did I miss something? What happened to roxol?

Frito Pie. The story here is that it originated at the Woolwort’s lunch counter on the Plaza here in Santa Fe. Chile con carne, cheese, chopped onions over an open singles bag of Fritos Corn Chips Still loved by many!
Lynn, they call those walking tacos now.

I flagged it too.

Um I planted 2 packs in pots and did not get one to germinate
Put the pots in the fridge for 4weeks - they like a bit of a cold spell. Keep them uncovered.
Ontario, I doubt there will be the number of fires this year, unless some nut starts them deliberately like was done last summer. The guy who did it was charged and convicted of starting dozens of them. Funny tho, the press hardly paid attention to it because he was a dedicated anything-for-mother-earth eco-loon.
What/where is the DMV?? Sorry, but that translates to the Department of Motor Vehicles to me :-))
What do you think is a plant's main eneegy source?
I would say the sun.
Nope. I had making a big scene. Thanks again.
tj
Clearly, but who actually says that?
Well, funny enough, that was my ”wrong” guess - change of scene! It was all I could come up with, but decided it coukdn’t be right since I’ve only ever heard change of scenery, too. Huh!
Partial eclipse here, so we got lots of crescents through pinholes. The light was weird and everything felt a bit cool for about 30 minutes.
Apple appetizer. Pruned my apple tree and left the branches on the ground and the rabbits are stripping the bark. Might just keep them from attacking my desirable shrubs.

African violet
Dedtired, was that you? And hopefully not recently?
Hey thanks tj!
wow, almost a duplicate of my trunk, except older.
Thanks for the encouragement.
I've planted enough scraggly white spruce from the woods, and they looked good after a couple years but thought it better to ask than wish I had. ;-)
Mine should get full direct sun from an hour after sunrise until about 2pm. Then shade from the adjacent shed takes over (looking SW at the picture). Thanks again!
OP Beautifull,,, looks like Golden Spreader to me

Here’s one from May 30, 2022 and it shows a little desperation. lol! I see daisies, buttercup, rhododendron, dames rocket (Hesperis), columbine, bearded iris, and bleeding heart. :)
This is from July 2018, memorable because I picked it for my friend's daughter's wedding... she liked it and brought it to her reception days later. As I was driving it over I had realized I left out the light blue delphinium, which was her wedding color so I went back to add that but it's not pictured..
What a great idea for a thread! Especially during this time of year when it's all about anticipation.
Sweet pea jubilee - my favorite cutting flower.
Building on the theme of the 'last call' dahlia harvest. It's the only time I let myself cut such long stems!
Petite desk bouquet for home office cheer. :)
Seems to me a pest that crawls 3 stories high should be called scale. ;-)

Sadly slugs and snails are not deterred by coffee grounds around plants. They happily attack my hostas even when the soil is entirely covered in them. https://www.gardenmyths.com/getting-rid-slugs-coffee-grounds/
As for spraying coffee on foliage, I believe the experiments were done with a caffeine solution, not brewed coffee. And in a wet climate spraying anything is a hiding to nothing. I'd be applying it everyday.
I've just removed three of my giant garden snails from a clematis obelisk. I cleared it yesterday too. And the day before ...
I'm sure you have done research and have tried a number of things, but don't give up, all you need is ONE way that works. Seek and you shall find.... 🙂

2007 --
Bird table at front:
June -- filling in more and more:
Weigela when young; it is huge now, and a companion now to a pretty clematis that the birds planted for me -- serendipitous color matching!
Behind this pillar with two clematis is 'Darlow's Enigma' rose, sweetly scented:
DH's favorite iris, 'Caesar's Brother'.. I prefer the bearded ones.
July --
Spring 2008:
The young clumps of small white blooms in the upper right are Leucojum 'Gravetye Giant', stunning as they have grown bigger, and I highly recommend them!
Inexpensive pergola from BJs Wholesale --- I liked the style, so it jumped into my cart and came home with me. Lots of potted lilies. And a foursome of the seasons on the wall which I could not resist:
Crabapple afer bloom, getting big, accompanied by my gremlin:
June -- the daisy meadow has completely become only a memory from this point and permanently disappeared behind this area by now. I do miss its cheerful look:
Lupines did not care for my location, sadly, and died out quickly:
Nice peony on the left, but this area has become a jungle nowadays:
Golden Vicary privet is the bright chartreuse shrub on the left:
On left: the river birch shooting ever upwards. Center is the crab also getting big, with the weigela influenced by them both and trying to do the same. Notice how the lawn has beginning to be infiltrated by clover:
Blueberry bushes and the deep pink fairy rose. And the world's best garden cart, bar none (made in the USA !!), lightweight and I can handle a full load with one hand easily:
Far too hot on this deck for me to enjoy it:
Not fond of the hot pink spirea color next to the other plants! I'm too cowardly to yank them out...
I'm a complete sucker for cherub statues of the four seasons. The roadside trees, mature oak and maple, now shade this garden far too much. And this is the front lawn in its heyday -- it does NOT look like this any longer:
This charmer resides in my front hall indoors now -- he gets decorated for Christmas every year! The other three are stored in the garage. Perhaps I will bring them all out again into the sunlight this year for a change....
August. This is getting a bit too repetitive, isn't it?
2009
Along the front walkway:
A wonderful veronica 'Darwin's Blue', which is now gone, and I wish I could locate a source for it now. It was so lovely.
Variegated willow on right. Bought two to hopefully soak up the excess water back here. Like many willows, they do the job, but have become enormous, and they get severe annual haircuts.
Dancer has very wet feet -- again. She now resides in a different location:
And that, my friends, is enough for one evening. It's a quarter to midnight, and I am going to go out into the cold to view the moon and hope to get a glimpse of the Northern Lights, supposed to be visible tonight. And then, to bed. =)
Not much change here, now the weather is cool and rainy so not getting much done. I did uncover some of my pots and about half of them have shoots starting. A couple in the ground have alos started, Sagae & Wolverine being the first. I need to get some Milorganite & Liquid Fence soon as the rabbits are already eating the daylily shoots. I ordered Sluggo Plus online, noone seems to stock it locally. Hopefully will help control the cut worms.
Also keeping an eye on the owl family. The babies are getting so big that there is hardly room in the nest for mother and babies.

Nope. I had personage (edge). Thanks Jasdip.

I’ve waited all day for a good April 1 post.

He missed a spot. ;-)
Here's my apple tree the last year I owned my old place.
~40 years old 'HaralRed'.
Never did anything to it. No sprays, no prune, no nothing, just enjoyed the Apples. ;-)
Did you get this as an email, or a notice within your account?
If an email, make sure that it really was from ATT- call their customer service line & ask. Do not click any links or open any attachments until you are sure!
ETA: I think that ATT would NOT change your password "proactively", they would tell you to change it.
Did you consider mulching the area and adding a couple of benches to use it as a gathering space?
