I just read her statement and am feeling really emotional right now. I lived this 22 years ago. Found out I had cancer when my kids were 13, 10 and 15 months. The hardest moment of my life was telling my 13 and 10 year old, and then trying to shelter and protect them. Harder than all the chemo by far. I can not imagine what it must be like to go through something like this and having it turn into a global phenomenon.
"The RF owns it because their ancestors grabbed it all before anyone else did."
True. The same can be said of most inherited property and wealth. And we could get into the issue of North and South Americans and Australians profiting today from their ancestors having seized indigenous land.
Untangling history is a complex process. The UK has made progress: the Sovereign Grant itself is an example of the state benefiting from the King's income, as is the fact that the King now pays personal income tax, property tax and VAT. Inheritance tax should be the next cab off the rank. And of course, while the King owns (sort of) the Crown Estate, 100% of the revenue goes to Parliament, with a relatively small proportion dedicated to the Head of State role, and the rest going to public services. So, it's not a "winner keeps all" situation at all. It's more nuanced than that.
If I’m not using butter, I usually use vegetable oil for dishes that require a neutral flavoured oil, or if not, extra virgin olive oil. I’m fortunate to have a good friend who has an olive grove.
Every year she starts the picking season by inviting a bunch of friends over for a massive picking session on a weekend. We start earlyish and pick until morning tea, then go back out and pick until a late lunch time. Those who want to can go and watch the olives we have picked (usually about 3/4 of a tonne to a tonne depending on how well they grew that year) being crushed into oil at the commercial olive oil farm next door. Afterwards we have a late lunch feast which often morphs into dinner. It’s a lot of fun. Everyone who participates goes home with a two litre bottle of that day’s olive oil.
I get extra bottles of olive oil as I make about a dozen different kinds of cake, cookies, scones etc for the morning tea.
Why don't you just have Dutch Wood make the books while they are at it.
Do you have a furniture plan? I think you should make one before deciding on cabinets. It’s the tail wagging the dog. Are you going to use the room or just walk by it? Can you post a floor plan? Just because you can get discounted cabs doesn’t mean you should. I think the wainscoting is very pretty and sophisticated. While the built in word art is, ugh sorry, childish and cheap.
Books as props makes my stomach churn. The Strand Bookstore in Manhattan has a service that will sell you books by the feet and in custom color combinations to use as bookshelf decor. Yikes.
I'm an author. I love reading. But, I keep only my all time favorites that would be hard to find in a library. After I finish a book I drop it in one of the free library boxes in my neighborhood. Or, it is a library book to start with.
I really loathe the idea of reading on a Kindle. But my eye site is declining and the ability to enlarge print is tempting.
A While back I read about sous vide. I recognized its amazing potential usefulness in the kitchen. The problem was there was no sous vide cooker made for the home kitchen, only commercial ones costing $2,000 to $5,000 for professional restaurants.
So I rounded up electronic parts and motors and constructed my own. Some old timers here can remember many interesting reactions I got in this forum when I posted food prepared using the sous vide method.
I don't remember how many years I have been using my sous vide machine. It still works. But I have purchased three commercial units. Often when I have invited guests, I may cook with two units, and with the third one as the backup in case one fails.
Sous vide makes entertaining much easier. And with meats and seafoods so expensive, I want guaranteed end results; sous vide makes it possible.

What ever happened to using a rake and a broom?
They’re in the same place all the horses went when the automobile caught on 😉
Three times I’ve tried to post a copied paragraph explaining what a baby shower by mail is. It is explained in this blog, if this posts. It is a thing.
https://www.happiestbaby.com/blogs/pregnancy/baby-shower-alternatives
I did post for a super short time, didn’t like what I wrote, and not enough time to edit, so I deleted the entire post. it was there for maybe 10 seconds. But I still think gifts are expected.
I sorta hate both wedding and baby showers. It’s the awful games. I hate the stupid games.
“I sorta hate both wedding and baby showers. It’s the awful games. I hate the stupid games.”
me too, Bunny.
I also dislike the opening of gifts. To sit and watch the honored open gifts and make the appropriate comments is very off turning to me. I hated it when I was the one doing the opening, still hate it when I am the gift giver.
Real deal. I do not like the seam behind Mr. Wynn. It distracts from his wonderfulness
Focus on your mom and only what you have to do right now. No matter how things go, that is time you won't get back and it won't wait. You can join the circus anytime. ;-) Been there, and I'm so sorry for all you and your mom are dealing with, but I'd camp out in a tent and dig a latrine to have had more time with my mom.
I’m so sorry, lyban. i wish i could help.
I have 2 books of poems by Merrit Malloy and I have always loved that one.
I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you can find comfort and peace in the memories of your husband.
" Nothing thus far says her story should have been glorified with a movie..... "
Huh?
Here is a small sample of WONDERFUL books and movies that come to mind immediately that are based on murder or other serious crimes committed by important characters:
The Godfather
In Cold Blood
Chinatown
Killers of the Flower Moon
Silence of the Lambs
Psycho
Let's not forget the work of the English writer of filthy trash whose stories often have murders, like:
Macbeth
Othello
Julius Caesar
Hamlet
King Lear
and many others.
Edit to add:
Whether one agrees or not (I don't particularly), there have been many people over the last 70+ years who sincerely believed that individuals from military, political, and scientific circles who contributed to the development of the atomic bomb that killed several hundred thousand civilians were guilty of murder. So to have a complete list, the movie Oppenheimer should also be on the list of filth. A movie many speculate will win Best Picture.
“I put on makeup even if I am home, alone”
Me too. I dress daily knowing that there is always the chance of an emergency. I want to look cute if a helicopter has to rescue me from a roof and there are cameras watching while I am lifted up in a basket.
Plus I really am more productive when dressed.
“but not visiting a state because of political differences will keep those tax dollars away from our innocent children's school districts, infrastructure, and everything else.”
And some live in a state where the governor does not accept federal funding for things like the infrastructure.
@Oakley your state also turns down federal money for programs that benefit it‘s population.
“but not visiting a state because of political differences will keep those tax dollars away from our innocent children's school districts, infrastructure, and everything else.”
The governor of my state refused federal assistance for the summer food program citing need for ‘self-sufficiency’. And yet he wasted no time handing out massive raises for 11 cabinet members.
Btw, Oklahoma did the same to its innocent children.
I think whomever thought up the term “vegan leather” to sell plastic is probably the same genius who thought to brand plastic flooring ”luxury vinyl.”
It’s still plastic.
🤣 Oh gosh, I only boycott Pepsi bc I personally do not like the taste compared to DC! Nothing else…I just get put out when a restaurant for some reason switches to Pepsi 🤣
