Ive cured crown gall ON THE CROWN, but never on the shaft. That's... gross and impressive and sad. Its a two year process on the crown, with watercolor brush and bleach. It WILL destroy the wood, but it will eventually regenerate if it has the resources and the source of the gall is eliminated (like standing water).
However, below the soil line is another story, and I am not sure it is recoverable at all.
Be sure to disinfect your tools. It's mostly spread via tools and water/water in soil. It is most likely to happen in waterbound soil, but it can happens randomly, as well.
I do not recommend any of this to novices. If you don't understand what you are doing, you can spread it, which is why master gardeners usually suggest destroying the plant.
Agrobacterium is more common than people think, and is found in many different soils, waters, and a vast array of plants, fungi, etc.
Gardening tools nicking a rose can also cause infection, as can crop tools in wholesale settings. Even a bad graft can cause it due to the exposure between the graft and the rootstock, and I have seen that.
It's mostly about cultural practices. So lets say a business has their hedges clipped 2x a year, and they also have a very nice watering system. Lets say the watering system runs early spring into late fall. Then, lets say Rose 'WhateverHotLandscapeRoseOfThatDecade' is pruned low, en masse, in October. Do you think hedge pruners always cut perfect stem edges, with perfectly clean blades? Now, imagine alllll of those sprinklers watering those perfectly cut and jaggedly cut stem ends. A recipe for gall. This time near the growth points. Especially the cultivars with wiry stems that don't cut perfectly, or those with stems too tough for electric sheers.
.
I asked again about my exclusive rose yesterday and for an ETA on shipping and I received a response that Gracie and Ryan are unavailable to oversee the shipping, so no shipments at this time.
I don’t understand this at all. I would think for such a large operation there would be a Shipping Manager and team to handle this type of work.
That looks like Doctor Huey. It's just old rootstock. It's really not worth keeping.
I think potting it up now while small will minimize the chances of damaging the roots and also give the rose the entire growing season to recover from the shock and settle in, giving it a better chance over the winter.
If you do pot it up you will want to keep it in shade and well watered for a week or two afterwards.
Thanks for the great info. I'm going to pot it up tonight and hope for the best a free rose is a free rose.
I'm just trying to wrap my head around how it got there. My potted bushes are at least 50 feet away from this bed and the bed only has little lime hydrangeas in it.
Spike with his infamous trips to Disneyland lol.
Feel free to email -- It's ALWAYS good to talk to you.
But I talked to Paul, so the answer is pretty much what I thought.
Elena can you please message me because I cant message you?
Kitty please check you DM. Thank you!
Lol now theres noone on the list??
My Russelliana would fit in your space, Heather.
Where my roses grow, I generally get great sprays of Rosa moschata in fall and I've gotten two National Dowager queens with them. They are spectacular sprays and fragrant as well.
Now for the downer: at my last local show I was answering a stranger's questions about OGRs. at the OGR table. We were talking categories and how they were different and what grows well here. One of the local Great rosarians (He Has won all the local ARS medals that exist) comes up, takes him by the elbow and said, "don't waste your time with these old things, let me show you what you need to be growing" and dragged him to the hybrid tea table."
I will always regret not calling NW out for his rudeness.
That looks like Excelsa to me too
starmade - I haven't noticed any smell.
Markay - Yes, mine came from Rose Petals. Since I like it, I thought I wouldn't ask for a refund.
Whether you want a refund or not, you should let them know that they are selling the wrong variety.
Here is my Diablo Hawk (Paul Barden) baby of Tradescant. From RVR. I love it.
Beth Hana, yes, to repeat, please read Seaside's post on Etsy sellers. I am totally disheartened by all the illegal trade in Japanese roses--not to mention the Roses LLC debacle. Diane
@janetwinkles Janet, I do so wish you wouldnt say you were banned from Rose Geeks and infer that it was because you posted about Graden Roses LLC. You are fully aware that is not why we removed you. 😀
We wanted you to post and reviewed and approved your post with the caveat that you post while we were awake to moderate the comments. You agreed to the time requested for the following day. (We didnt want you to receive heat for your post from the members).
You chose instead to post after the Admin team went to sleep. To make matters worse, you left the group after posting and receiving the negative feedback from members.
Thank you not talking negatively about Rose Geeks. We really try out best to make it a nice group to support one another.
Sending wishes for early blooms 🥰
@EnglishRoseBud Also remember they set up a scholarship fund at Texas A & M and put $25,000 into a trust fund there. My belief is that they though it would give them more credibility and enable them to perpetrate further deceptive business practices. Interestingly, the columnest who wrote the article in the Lancasteronline.com forum concerning Nate’s attempt to start a company to manage the personal finances of elderly clients, Brett Hambright, is now the press secretary for the Pennsylvania Attorney General. I spoke with Brett twice in late February after learning that the district attorney and the judge in the identity theft case were made aware of a GoFundMe account Nate had set up asking for $5,000 in donations to start up this business and had called him into court. Nate is banned for life from handling the personal finances of anyone other than himself. GoFundMe returned the donations to the people who gave it and also banned Nate from creating any new GoFundMe accounts. In speaking with Brett as well as the columnist who took over Brett’s blog, there are several other scams Nate and Tess have been involved with. At no time in their adult lives have either of these people worked a regular 40 hour per week job. I have a lengthy timeline that documents other attempts to scam customers in niche industries. It was difficult for me to sit back and read online comments from people who don’t know any of this and are waiting for roses.
EnglishRoseBud, as the original poster, I request that anyone using this thread refrain from comments like you just made in your post above about such people deserving “to rot in prison”, etc. This thread is still here to record and keep us updated on this unfortunate business. All of us here believe in honesty and justice, but let’s leave vindictive comments out of the discussion. Thank you kindly.
